I just recently found this site and as it so happens I am also working on a large isometric pixel art landscape and I cant quite seem to get the water tiles to look all that great. Could anyone give me an idea at how they approach isometric water tiles? or a guide? or anything?

...I've allready looked at the guide that someone posted earlier but it really didnt help me all that much.

Edit: Here are the grass tiles in a lighter and darker color

These are my ugly water tiles (or maybe I am too critical of myself?):

I don't know why this in this topic instead of WIP, but whatever. The
grass looks great you can barely see the seams, good job. The
darker water looks OK, perhaps just needing some top highlights, but
not as much as version 2. You do seem to have a gazillion colors on
both grass and water (don't like that). Keep us posted on your
progess with this project

Maybe I am just beeing too critical of myself...I will try highlighting the darker color and see how it goes.

Edit: Come on...its only 21 colors for the grass tile and the cliff side. Whats wrong with that...

Anyways do these look better?

I hope you don't mind that I edited your tile. I find it easier to show than explain. Notice several things you might want to bear in mind. First the colors, you used colors that seems a bit "red" to me. I brightened these up and introduced some yellow as the base for a more luminescent hue. I placed a ground green and grass green to emphesise the colors in its surrounding. When I mentioned "too many colors" what I mean is that water is quite difficult to illustrate in pixels, yours have so much detail that it ends up looking *off* which is what you seem to be disliking. On my version I only used 7 colors and simplified your tile to its basic/important pixels (VIP pixels ), I think it comes across wetter than yours. You are welcome to further modify this if you like since there is still a definite pattern going on.

FYI; my program counted 39 colors on the water tile

To be what is probably overly critical, your grass lacks direction. Sure, you absolutely ROCKED the whole seamless tile, but the grass still looks too much like noise to me. Not accusing you of cheating or anything, just saying that it needs a little more clarity.

This:http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/2825.htm
Has a bit more "direction" of the grass. It doesn't do as well at destroying the seams, but in my opinion, looks much more like grass. You can make out individual blades of grass, etc.

...can't find the other tile I'm lookin' for, but I hope that gives you an idea.

As for the water, your water is completely flat, or looks that way. In order to make them cool light-bendatures and stuff, you've got to have a couple ripples, etcetera. 'course I'm almost talking out my ass and really have no idea how you'd do that, just thought I'd make that observation.

You're doin' alright, keep at it.

I actually did draw individual blades of grass...
Interestingly enough that picture was my inspiration but I really dont want my graphics to look exactly like that. As for the water tiles I'm going to try a completely new direction and see how that turns out...

Jalllloooonso. I'm sure it hasn't gone unnoticed, only unmentioned. I forgot, in my commenting, to mention how you HAD given the water some dimension, and had a more realistic looking water tile in many ways. Just 'cause I didn't say it doesn't mean it wasn't useful (Whooa lotta negatives), and I'm thinkin the same goes for smirt.

The only improvement I'd suggest on your tiles as an example, Jal, would be pretty much the same as my grass whining; Give it some direction.

Myessss...

I think that grass is absolutely ok since I like real stuff. Those grass tiles with directions in it are not realistic enough, I really don't know if these tiles are going to be used in realistic enviornment or not, but I like it. ´And jalonso proved a great point with his edit, he just earned 1,5 respect points with this.
