lot about pixel art" would have been able to make it in under 10.

Ok, Dar Kuma, I will assume you are not a troll account and can get a comment without getting angry.

I think you are kind of confused of some aspects in pixel art. The goal of pixel art is that each pixel has a purpouse, by using less colors, but different from each other you create contrast, even "realistic looking" things have contrast in lights and shadows. Using, lets say, a base red, a dark red for shadow and a very light red for light will create a surface more pleasing to the eye than 10 reds that are very similar from each other, because that would look kind of flat, and unrealistic, because it wouldn't have shine or shadows like real objects do.

To add to the surface you play with textures using dither, the colors fuse more smoothly than a simple gradient. You say you want to go to a realistic look. Zoom in some photos and you will see a lot of color tones that are very different from each other, and a lot of similar ones that when zooming out you can't tell the difference.

If you think that's stupid or useless, maybe pixel art is not the art for you? Pixel art is mostly what you find in the nes, super nes, gameboy, etc. The more realistic graphics are done in the same basis, since there is a defined concept of what pixel art is. You don't want to create stuff that a simple tool in photoshop could do.
