I'm open to critic, but please be gentle.  This is my very first isometric and it's probably pretty horrible.  I did a couch cause I figured it would be simple enough.

Well, firstly, welcome to the PJ forums! Whatever the members say about your pieces, you've gotta remember that it's not personal and all their trying to do is help, so if anything is a bit far from gentle, dont worry.

Well, your AAing of the diagonal lines looks good to me. But the 'padding' you're giving the verticle one's is really not needed, and gives a 'pillowshaded' look, which is never liked in pixel art. The back of the couch looks quite thin compared to the rest, looking at reference pictures will always help you here.

Now i'm gunna tell you: Black lines = bad. The light is going to catch the edges of the sofa very much so, and therefore most of them would be a highligt colour. Taking away black lines will assure a more realistic piece, and take away the cardboard cutout feeling.

Have a go at an update and i'll/we'll critique you further.

First of all, thank you for the welcome and the critic.  I fixed the outlining.  I feel like a dufus, I just completely blew off the lighter inside portions.  I also thickened the back just a bit.  You couldn't see it before, but I made it so the back actually has cushions that are higher than the back itself.

Hmm, i wouldnt go about putting highlighted lines instead of every black line, sorry if i advised you wrongly. Say, if the light shon onto the side of the couch, it wouldnt hit the otherside of the arm, and therefore neither the groove of the arm and seat. If you get me. And personally i think the raised cushion idea is neat, but would only work with larger (or exaggerated) cushions, as now they seem paper-thin.

Keep it up!

Nice work so far. Just wanted to mention as general tips for those starting out in pixel art: try not to get discouraged, practice makes perfect, tutorials are your friend, try to spend as much time as you can on a work (like an hour each day), and as Lar said, don't take critque's personally of course.

Nice couch lineart so far. If you're looking to make a large iso piece, The Joint is always looking for submissions.

Welcome to the forums and pixart in general. :D

I will for now only explain the coloring in iso this way. You need 5 colors for every shade you choose. A light for the top, the medium for one side and a darker for the other. These are based on the lightsource. All the vertical highlights are done with the top light color. Aa even lighter color (white only if its glass or plastic) for the horizontal highlights and the darkest hue (some insist on black, urghhhh!!!!) for all the outlining on the shaded side and using the dark shadow shade for outlining the lit side. Follow this rule and you will make iso items with interest regardless of how simple they are.

I will disagree with Larwick on the AA when doing iso. If it needs it, your lineart is bad/wrong (rule) the exception of course is a steep curve (see my bugseum here on the WIP section if you wish to see an ezample of this) but for the most part the isometric mathematics of 25.565 degrees require zero line AAing.

EDIT: typos
