    Posted: 18 May 2006 at 12:11pm
Hello, I am a game programmer and developer that is considering putting a team together called BlueStar.  This team's purpose would be to produce free Indi-Games, and in some cases games to sell, to showcase the power of the wide spectrum of styles that pixel art has.  I personally get nothing from this game development team, but am the acting Head Programmer and Development Director.

Now to the point, as I have mentioned, BlueStar is a production team, but a team implies that there is more than one person involved.  So, I am openning the team to any Programmers, Pixel Artists, or Game Designers that are interested in creating Indi-Games that will blow people away.  By joining BlueStar you do not need to fully dedicate yourself to it, you may work on projects whenever you wish, start your own projects, and so on.

If you are a Pixel Artist and have game mockup art that you think would be great as a game, just contact the BlueStar team and most-likely a new project will be underway.

Being a game programmer, I already have game engines created, engines for Platform games, Isometric RPGs, and regular RPGs; so games will not be to hard to put together unless the project implies a completely new engine or unique engine.

I like this job offering very much.
But I'm pretty sure my pixel art isn't of good enough quality yet.

BlueStar team is open to any range of experiences in pixel art, it just depends on how enthusiatic and 'in love' you are with creating pixel art.

Shading can be quite tricky for most people.  I can't say that I am expert at it at all, but I've studied quite a few examples compliments of the artists here at PixelJoint.

Sure, that would be great.  With my undertaking in the programming of Rustbug, and school exams on the horizon, I dont really have the time to spread about into different projects.  But if you get a good lookin site design made, I'll be able to host it on my hosting account.  You can send me any website graphics/pages via email at dodgedemon@gmail.com  :D

lol, awesome, I believe that BlueStar's purpose is to help it's members learn more in their respective fields.  So, along the way you will acquire new techniques and sharpen your skills.

That's cool. It'll be a while before I get round to anything, but In four weeks, I'll have ages to work on stuff...
FYI - My website ICT coursework was the best in the class

Could even help with the Game Designers

not officially, but since Q.K., aka MotD, joined BlueStar and I'm part of BlueStar, we both were gonna see what you thought of it.

There is now a new project that is need of a pixel artist to draw up a star-filled background for a space-based game, as well as some special effect sprites for explosion/special attacks/energy shields/etc.  There will be screenshots of the game up later today (5/25/06).  It is a 2D shoot-em-up multiplayer game that is online enabled, and is currently being beta tested on a LAN network locally.  If you are interested just drop me an email at dodgedemon@gmail.com or just PM me.

thanks for catching the site bug.

Well, if he is talking about the game, the background should be mainly black, and the stars should be variants of light blue, light purple, and hue'd whites.  Planets and moons would also be nice to include, for those I'd say blues, greys, greens and purples.

the game is fullscreen, so it would be best if the background had 128x128 tiles.

I like the sound of this. A team accepting even less-talented people that nevertheless have a certain passion for their work in common. A team not merely focused on developing games as a team but also developing each member's individual talents.. as a team.

Even though I doubt I would be useful due to being a lazy programmer/pixel artist I hereby would like to express my appreciation of this project. May it be successful! \o/

Spoon: We would be glad to have you aboard.  If you are interested in pitching game design ideas to any of the projects, feel free to email them to rustbug@gmail.com or dodgedemon@gmail.com

Artisan: All you have to do is say you wanna join and I'll add you to the team list on the temporary BlueStar site.

miau: Thanks for the vote of confidence!  What programming language(s) do you know?  Even the laziest programmers/pixel artists have a place on the BlueStar team because of how it is setup to allow its members to work on their projects at their own pace.

I'm mostly into C/C++
Java does not win over me simply because.. well.. you need Java (Even if it's possible to somehow make executables/packages.. the java core remains -> I like it low level)
But that's just personal preference.. Give me any programming language + a good manual/reference and I'm sure I can come up with something.

Another field of interest is music.. Composing is definitely something I want to advance in. Creating a full video game soundtrack has always been a dream of mine :|

Well, you caught my interest.. Just be warned that I'm a slow worker (unless I've got some vacation from school and thus lots of motivation ), but since you said it doesn't really matter that much... well.. consider this as an application.

miau:  While this is true, now adays almost every computer contains some form of the JVM.  It would be a good change in pace to have an experienced C/C++ programmer on the team.  Do you know any OpenGL?

I did plunge into the world of OpenGL before (NeHe's tutorials, yay!).
Nevertheless for game programming I've mainly been using Allegro or SDL until now (small projects only). If I decided to write my own general purpose game engine I'm planning to use in all my future projects I'd probably consider using OpenGL as well.
I'm getting acquainted with things once I need them, don't have a very in-depth knowledge of OpenGL right now.

maiu: Ya, the best thing to do is create your own engine for different game styles and then refine it as much as you can until it is a golden trophy of awesomeness.  That is what I have done with my platformer engine, and am still doing with it.  I continue to use it for each platformer game that I need to make, but refine it further when making it unique to the game's needs.

Heh, exactly.
I suppose your engines are all Java based?
Sorry, somehow I still doubt using Java is a good idea. I can't think of any more arguments why you should not use it. I guess it's just because I've been programming very low level lately (also for entirely different platforms e.g. the GBA) and love how C allows me to control nearly every aspect in my programming/how things will actually work. While I could imagine individual developers using Java because programming is somewhat faster when using Java's easy to use code base than starting from scratch I think a whole team with even an own API.. well...
So for me the only reasons using another language than C/C++ would be:
  1. Most of your programmers cannot program in C/C++ (seems to be the case(?))
  2. You don't want to write everything from scratch (shouldn't be a vital matter in a team of serious developers)
  3. You also want to make the games enjoyable directly on the web (applets) or on cell phones (I still prefer having an executable for each game on my hard disk.. as for cell phones.. well, I do not own one myself, sounds reasonable though as it's a good platform for pixel art based games)

miau: There is a programmer that used to program in C/C++ on the team, but he started learning Java and became more comfortable with it, as he says "...its a lot cleaner than C++...".  Java can be made into .exe standalone executables, as well as Applets and Jars.  Java just holds alot more potential as a maintained language.  For most C++ programmers, Java is always gonna be below C++, that is sometimes caused by the old idea that Java is slower or less competent than C++; which both cases are false.

artisan:  Will do.

Been awhile since I had anything new to report about the BlueStar team positions, but now I would like to announce that BlueStar is an official Game Development group currently working on around 5 games, with more on the way.  I am still looking for talented pixel artists to join up with BlueStar to help make great art for the games that BlueStar develops.  If you are interested, there is now a forum up for BlueStar at the following address:
