I know there is already a topic for pixel art software, but recently the program i was using that allowed transparency and for me to save animations as gifs has stopped working and won't let me re-install . I also can't find the site i downloaded it from. So I want people to post the best full (I don't want annoying limited trial versions) free pixel art programs that you can find. I'm looking for quality not quantity. One good link would do.

I don't know of any free proggies to do both drawing AND animation, but a combination of MS Paint and Unfreez works fine for most things.

BTW, have you ever heard of Stick Online?

RPG is numberwang.

graphicsgale free edition-- http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/download.html
the free version is okay, but does not support moving gifs, only avis(which you can change to gifs on photoshop or another program), and their own format.  graphicsgale was made for pixel-work and has features that greatly resemble some kind of photoshop~MSPaint hybrid.  it is worth a look, and supports transparency. also, the help files are in Japanese, so good luck. =P

graphicsgale full version-- *cough** http://isohunt.com/ * *cough* um... this is a pay program and I am not condoning stealing programs
this is the exact same as the free version, but a hundred times better.  THE HELP FILES ARE IN GLORIOUS ENGLISH!  onionskinning is available, and works!  moving gifs are supported!  if you can lay your hands on a copy of this *cough* legally of course, then do get it without hesitation(and send me a link to the torrent file*cough* I mean--what?!--gah!! now the FBI ARE AFTER ME!!!)

I have to say, I'm really liking Graphics Gale, despite its occasional quirks, and I think it's worth the ~17 USD that Human Balance is charging for it.

AdamDee: I'd be curious to know what else you'd want a pixel program to do to be "great" -- and if there's anything out there that qualifies, free or not.

I like graphics gale but I don't want to buy the full edition. A while ago I had a completely free program, called pixel studio that allowed everything you neede for pixel art ; transparency, saving and making animated gifs in the same program, but now it doesn't work. Come to think about it it may have been a trial version. Not too sure really.

Hm. Guess it depends how valuable transparency, layers, and animation are to you. And how much $17 is worth to you, too. :P

FYI, Pixel Studio is $50: http://www.filestream.com/pixelstudio/
