Hello there My name is Shane and I am new to the gaming world.I have been learning simple Lang called DM.As I get the basic game design down I will be progressing my Programming skills.

I am working on the coding needed for my game, but my graphic design skills are not that great. I am able to do houses but thats it .

I am in need of some iconist,as of now I am creating my own, but I feel the look of the game is one of the most important,becuse lets face it, if you dont like what your staring at for hours on end, your not going to keep playing

The game will be a large project for one person to do alone, reason Im posting here

Note I am making most of these myself,but any icon donated to the progress of my game will be credited

I can not offer anything but credit, so dont expect much help,but if anyone is kind enough I would be greatful for it

Well guess I figured people normally want paid for there time, Well was worth a try.

 

This project is going to be large.the game will be based on Mid-Evil times.

There will be 4 starting races

Human
Orc
Elf
Human

In return also 4 starting towns,each town will be in a proverence that is ruled by who ever owns the castle (npcs to start with).As long as the castle is held by NPC's there will be 10% taxes in play,but once owned by a clan taxes can be lowered to 0% or Rasied to 50%.

There will be no Class sets, players will instead take on jobs.And learn the skills needed for that profession.(but this doeasnt limit a player to learn other jobs or trades)

Players will have full feedom of charater development, and can choose the way they wish to play.

Players will be able to purches land from the kingdom, and with there skills,be able to build object such as houses on there land.

Clans can be started and joined by players and as they grow they will have to do quest to advance there clan.Once they have become a level 3 clan they will be able to war other clans and attempt to take strongholds or castles.At level 5 they can create an alliance.

Each race will have its own language and unless you have taken the time to learn that language you will not understand the other races.

The magic system will involve a unquie apporach,where gemstones will be the primary source of power for the spell.
example,an amulet with a ruby in it can be charged by a wizard with the spell fireball, and then giving to someone who is magicaly challenge(orc and dwarfs due to there lower int,men,and wis stats),and then they will be able to cast that spell till the charges are gone from the amulet.
Note powerful wizards dont need gemstone to cast there spells the have the mental power to do so.

A thief system will allow people to rob homes of players or steal from NPC stalls.But picking a lock of a players home may no be the only thing stoping you from entering, Wards can also be placed on door ways that must be broken with the use of magic.

Stores will be stocked by the local NPC's,or by Players,so your town will not flourish if you do not help it to.If a store runs low on a supplie and the Blacksmith is burden to badly to create the needed items, then the store will not be fully stocked,(but the black smith will ask for you to gather supplies needed for him to create the needed items, and offer a wage) also in turn anything you sell to the shop will be sold by the shop.

As the house pick shows it will be a top down(like 65 degrees or so) 2d MMORPG

there will e alot more to this, such as farming,crafting,fishing,forgaging,hearding and more.

This is a quick desription of what the game will be.

Basically I need graphics to test my code

Skills and Spells will be tought by Guild's, Each guild specialize in a certain skills/spells.At level 20 a charater has the option to appertenceship with an Npc.In doing so they will be able to learn added skills that the Npc will only teach to there students.These (Teacher skills)can only be leveled by attaining the sp needed to advance its level.(Note:Differnt teachers may teach differnt skills even if its for the same type of class)

Each race may or may not have all these guilds in there starter town.Skills can be race specfic or cross race.

At lvl 1 you can choose max of 5 active skills, if you find you do not like the current skill you can delete the skill, but it takes 1 full day to forget skill,then every 3 charater levels you will be able to learn 1 extra skill.

Some Npcs will teach free skills to level one players, such as weapon mastery,armor mastery,power strike,heal self,ect...

Its wise to figure out what type of Charater you wish to play and focus on just one set of skills, but dual classes can be just as good, but dont try to pratice to many differnt skills becuse you may find it to hard to max them out.

More will be added but these will be in the beta release, many skills/spells are stacable (meaning if your buffed with one, another can buff you with a differnt,same spells/skills cancle leaving the higher lvl one on the target)

These are the beta testing skills, I have plans of creating another 100 or so skills.

Crafting system will be done like most other games,but with the addition of sockets,one will be able to socket a gemstone into the items they are creating, and then someone who knows enchatments will be able to give the item a magical effect.Differnt gemstones can hold differnt types of enchantments.

Rubies-Are known to be placed in items who wish to add damage or defense to the item.

Diamonds- Know to be added to rings,necklaces,and Amulets to add summon stype of spells

Also I am working on a system where NPC's acutally do more then talk/walk/fight.

Example Shop A sells all of Item A,Shop a Sends Mail to BlackSmith A,BlackSmith A Sends Appertence(NPC/PLAYER{Quest}) to gather the needed items to craft item a,blacksmith Crafts item,send item to Shop a, and now shop A has the item back on its selfs.

shops will be stocked by players, and NPC's, I want to create a system where I can acutally have a NPC town running with no player interactions, and that NPC town can acutally raid PLayer towns,or players can RAid that town.

If I can manage to do this I will be happy, becuse I always wanted to play a game where the mobs acutally attacked towns/and where players must defend/build there towns (of course there would be warnings when monster would be attacking,kinda like a weekly event thing,that way players dont have to worry about the town 24/7)

well thought I would post an update.

 

We still need pixel artist.My pixel skills are improving each and every day, but I still lack certain skills, such as animations of sprites.

We are looking for some one who can take a normal sprite image and animate it, along with giving it 3-4 differnt face styles and hair.Once we have these the 1st stage of alpha testing can start.

SO if your intrested in helping a FREE game get started please let me know, I am refraining from post the sprites on this site due to the fact that I have seen 75% of the images ripped and placed somewhere else on the net.

Well what I really need now to start testing is sprites for each race. I can handle the modifcation of each sprite (such as skin tones).

We also need magic spell sprites, for skills listed above.But our main concern atm is 46x32 sprites or 32x32 sprites. I am starting to become a good turf tile set designer, if you check the WIP thread you can see how I have improved over the last month or two.

Each sprite need 3 differnt faces/hair designs and three outfits. once we have these sprites we can work on setting up our alpha test of the game.

Where still looking for someone who can do sprites, Where in no rush, we came to the conclusion that this game will take 6-8 months before we are finished.
 
So if you have any free time feel free to donate to this freeware game, and help the BYOND community gain a game worth playing.
 
We also have a 2nd game in production called FoulSpawn(something to work on while we await the needed graphics for this game).

Thanks for the encouragement,but finding an artist is tough, whats even though is , where thinking of changing the whole game to Iso :)

Iso in 8x16???  Man, you dont know what youre asking.  What you made right there is about the best youre going to get.  Just toss some color on that and youre done. :(
 
And since when does BYOND do iso?  Or are you just programming the movement and obj collision that way?

someone has created a iso engine for byond,it moves the camera in 45 degree angles,its really not that bad, and with byond 4 about to come out (was told around x-mas) it will have OpenGl so it should be able to handle Iso (as of now its slow) but again once they add OpenGl to it I can create iso images of any size :).
 
Basically we plan on making the game before it adds OpenGl with the smaller icons (since we can only use 32x32 tiles for now) then when they add Opengl upgrade it to our 2:1 images (64x32)

Why go through the effort of making 8x16 sprites when your going to re-make them and change the size later on?

Not sure,why create a rough draft of an image if your only going to change it?

I guess mainly for a rough idea of how I want the game to look and function.
 
We havent decided if we are going to realease the smaller image game to the public yet, or just wait it out.

Wow! I'll be damned...(wait...too late) That's my icon!
I made that iso engine in DM. Wierd! And good to see someone using it (or planning to!)

(I released it to the community along with all the icons I had the time/gumption to do, so in no way am I saying he stole this. It's everybody's.)
I lurk this site a lot getting much inspiration from you folks, and was surprised I didn't see byond in the game making link section. Seems like it would be a good match at least for some. So I did a search and...wierd.

Corvox, it IS a small space for iso sprites. I'm planning a 64 by 64 version that will be out after my next project. I have no idea when that will be.
The actual sprite/tile sizes in the engine right now are more than that, but not to far off a description for the humanoid proportions.
The full boundaries are here:

Alongside is a lady person sprite. Every object (well, 99%) in the engine has to have sprites drawn from 8 different angles (the 45 degree part). It definately puts a lot of the development onto the pixel artist. But...it turned out alright. (*Toots own horn*). Here is a gif animation from the demo map I released with the source:


To anyone remotely interested, I'd encourage you to check out some of the Byond games as it really is a fairly flexible system. More flexible than some might think. And, the community will soak up all the pixelly goodness you guys can throw at it and love you for it.
It's a good way to see your pixel art in action.
