Hello, this is my first time posting here (post count, duh! :)). Anyways I always wanted to become a great spriter. I started believing I had no talent and that sheer effort would make me improve. Well I am now able to create SOME work. However, I follow no rules only my insticts and I know nothing about the rules and such of spriting. Even after reading some tutorials, if I put what I learn to practice I fail miserbly. I learn with my eyes and adapt!
![]() ![]() ![]() I'll post some more work of mine soon.
I am really trying my best to learn how to create sprites because I have a really good story for a rpg game I want to create. I believe any good game needs it's own custom look to go along with a good story and litterly gave up because I couldn't find anyone to help/make the sprites for me and I am not confident in my abilities just yet. I want to slowly make a full cast of characters and keep consistency which is my biggest issue :(.

Could you please shrink them to 1x zoom? The forum has a zoom feature; click to zoom in and ctrl+click to zoom out. The sprites look good, but the ones in the middle image of characters have too much saturation and the middle character of the top image could use some better torso definition.

HI! Your title leaves me wondering where you were before this. Sorry, I might come across as a lil' accusing, but that's not my intention. I'm simply trying to make you aware of the fact that Pixeljoint (myself included) can get awfully hairy if we find these are edits rather than completely original works. It seems and sounds (by your using of the word "custom" and insistence in putting your name on the canvas) that you come from a sprite-rippin' sorta setting. That's a dangerous place to lurk out of, but as Jal mentioned (in the post after this) you've made an awesomely clear initial post, and seem trustworthy. I'm just warning you in case you isn't, 'cause we've had many before that isn't.If you edit something orrrr use something as a resource, it's usually recommended to put up links to those resources as well, so we can see 'zactly what you've changed, and the like.
Again, not saying these are just edits, just saying I'm suspicious. Kinda. SORRY, with that aside, I'll press on :)The "standing" frame (the one in the middle) has his left foot placed higher than his right. Just seems odd, to me.
Also, what's with the 2-by-2 white pixel boxes in each of the three characters? D'ye have some crazy psychological knowledge of RPG sprites that I've missed out on?
Gawd I sound like a dick. Sorry for sounding like a dick, and welcome to Pixeljoint! Edited by Saboteur - 01 September 2006 at 2:35am |

You my friend have stumbled upon the secret, guard it well ![]() I get no sense of suspicion here based on that very wise comment. All these sprites look great to me. They are consistent. Welcome to PJ EDIT: Feeling Ranty. This is the best first post I have seen on this forum. You have briefly explained your method, shown your art, asked for c+c, and were you hope to go with your art in a humble manner. Assuming you did not know about the zoom feature, going the extra mile to enlarge for viewing is thoughtful (DON'T DO IT AGAIN!) Many times a piece is posted as a WIP and no clue is given as to the intention for the piece. Edited by jalonso - 31 August 2006 at 11:24pm |

Hello again, thanks for the responses! Just hoping this topic doesn't get only a few posts and gets thrown to the older pages :). These sprites are mine and mine alone (sprites from scratch), if that clears anything up.

I just took this from where I orignally posted these. I don't even have the original sprites anymore. I enlargen them because that website doesn't have PJ enlargen feature. Here's the link of the original post.
Here are some other conceptual drawings of an idea I haad for a paint looking game I sort of just trashed. Note: All of these are old thumbnails I don't have access to to edit them for PJ. I didn't even notice these were 2x2 until I remembered that I enlargen them. Resizing them would just make them look stupid so.... Sorry! I keep that in mind for any new sprites I make.

Some things I wish to get some tips on is how to improve hair texture/shading, colour selection (big issue, takes me forever), body poses, creating nice eyes, and making sprites stand out on whatever backround. Sorry for the double post, I don't see an edit feature anywhere... Ok I now see it Edited by Bugger - 01 September 2006 at 12:55pm |

MoD was talking about the ''belt buckles'' on the top image, when he spoke about ''2x2 pixel squares'' i think. so monkey, i think they are buckles, except on the woman

Hi, I'll be your MoD for the evening :)
Belt buckles on the guys, yeah, but I'm wondering what it is on the girl. Not a bad thing by any means, I just kinda like it that you're using such a tactic to create consistency between your characters. Inneresting, and I'd never have thought of it. Props due, even if it WAS subconscious :)
