i only have the basic coloring down now, but here:
i traced the reference for the lineart, but i'm not using it for anything other than color references now.

I wouldn't entirely reccomend using a cartoon as a reference for pixel art. Usually cartoons aren't shaded terribly interesting, which doesn't leave much interpretation or ability for the artist to change or make it look different.
 
But, if you're going to do a cartoon, some AA and darklights are in order here.
 
Also, just a forewarning, tracing a picture, especially someone else's art (Homestar here was drawn by someone else), is looked down upon. In fact, because you've traced someone else's artwork, this may be a rip. It doesn't sound like that was your intent but... usually the only tracing "allowed" - for lack of a better term - is tracing of reference photos (preferably your own), photos of real things in life, not of cartoons.
 
At any rate, why do Homestar? why not make your own character and be a little more creative?

You traced the lineart, and it looks like you used the Fill tool to color it... with MS Paint's fully saturated default palette no less.
 
What exactly are we supposed to crit?
