The hybridization in question is edited photo (foliage) + hand pixelling (trunks). The third tree is 100% pixelled (though not all mine -- the foliage is from a set of graphics that Danc of Lost Garden released), just to show you what I'm trying to match.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the results. I may do some more cleanup -- I know they could use it, it's just a question of time. I also think I may have pushed the contrast too much -- at this point they actually look more like rendered 3D than photos to me, and I think it's because the shadows are so dark. So I may fiddle with that some more.

Anyway. Feedback appreciated, but be aware that I may ignore perfectly valid critiques for expediency's sake.

You left some stray pixels on the third one (blues).
The match between the trunk and the foliage is quite obvious. The contrast in particular.

Wow. The lighting is just perfect, even though the first two are photo conversions. Stunning. :'D

:P  we know stitchy, thats what a hybrid is :D

as for the trees, i dont think the trunks match at all...  the trunks to me are obvious pixel art, and the canopies are obvious phot reductions...  i think a full phot redux or full pixel art would be better.

For one, there's a consistency problem 'twixt the fully-pixelled tree and the two hybrids. The hybrids are sharp, clear and well defined, whereas the "pure" is blotchier and not as sharp.

There's also the issue of lightsource. Hybrids: top right, other: top down.

The details in the trunks are also kinda hard to make out, in my opinion. Moooore contrast? M'iunno.

Cool experiment, though, and good luck with it. I, for one, will be checkin' on this whene'er I can :P

Stray blue pixels: Noted and fixed. Thanks, jalonso.

For the hybrids, I've adjusted the lighting on the trunks, and tried to soften the foliage a little:

Thank you all for the feedback!

FYI, "top right" is the official lightsource of the game. I figured Danc's tree was close enough... it's right-ish, to my eye. :P

The updates look much smoother. All the trees need a shadow on the top part of the trunk where the foliage meets the trunk with this lighting.

Good point -- thanks.

So, as you can see from my updated top post, I'm having some trouble making my hybrid trees match each other, nevermind the "control" tree. If I'm lucky, though, I'll be able to use the different "styles" in different environments, as long as I don't mix'n'match. I want to get a basic engine and editor cobbled together and test that assumption before I do much more, though.

Ahh, the magic of different lighting. I figured that might be a problem. You honestly might have to look into taking all your pictures at the same time of day as the previous, and from roughly the same distance, and with the same camera at the same focus or... something?

M'iunno. It might also be an idea to attempt to splice together segments of different trees.

Haha, that'd be a lot of work.

The new tall lanky tree is way too saturated for the others.
The new bush seems to want a bit more contrast and perhaps some of the dark shades on the outline to better match the others.

I think the trunks of the trees could use some stark shading somewhere. Not necessarily all the shading, just different areas where shadows might appear. It would make them blend better with the sharp shading between the leaves and what not. :B
