Souly means that 20 colors is too many. Try to cut down on the colors... you could easily have done this with half of those colors.

Not a bad start, you might consider not using linear lighting.

You shade eveything in a linear fashion. Your midtones are the same hue as your base colors. Try shifting hues slightly between the base and light color.

I too agree with the color count. 3 for each shade is plenty, some could use just 2. Higher overall contrast might make it better too. This depends on any BG you may plan to use on these. Are you making a game? The character itself is very nice looking.

I'd really suggest trying out some tutorials on spriteart before you try to make forms yourself. It really helps.

That's complete bullsh*t.

I did the tiny sprite tutorial the first time and I didn't even READ it and managed to do something pretty good. Even if you look at the pictures and don't read what the tuts say, it can give you ideas.

You need to make some time and have some patience for art. If you don't have at least a bit of time and a good amount of patience, art isn't really for you. Artists don't just pull good pixels out of their ass, they practise again and again. If you're not willing to devote time to your art and keep practising and using tutorials and help people give you, then art really isn't the field for you.

what tiny sprite tutorial? ive dont up to the ambient lighting on sphere and then it treats you like a proffessional artist. if you ask me that person isnt very good at tutorials-at least not for beginners-and when ever i ask for easy tutorials people send me to there. i will try one more time but then i give up.

Well if the tutorials we give you aren't good enough, find some better ones on your own! Do some research or something.  Seriously, now even I think you should leave.
How does it not make sense to you? What is it that confuses you?
We can't just hand you everything on a silver plate, you've got to think and work through it.
Once again, your attitude is just annoying everyone.  We keep giving you chances and asking you to go on and try again, but all you do is bitch about how we make you sad.  Well if you showed any effort or appreciation for the time people put into helping you we'd try to be nicer, but if all you do is whine about how mean we are, why should anyone bother making you feel good about yourself?  That's your job.

It's not up to any of us to make you create something amazing.  We're just here to say yay or nay, you're the one who has to do the dirty work and make something worthy of praise.

I'll end my rant now, but I just want you to know that I'm generally very understanding of people who are just starting out, since I'm pretty much still there myself, but you're really getting on my nerves now.

I tried to highlight the important parts, to make sure it makes sense.

Well, I'm sorry. I stopped babysitting when I quit being a doller. I'm not here to kiss your ass. If you want sympathy, maybe you should try actually DOING a tutorial first, before you bitch a moan about how much you suck. Everyone here has gotten where they are because they have practised and stuck through it through thick and thin. WHY have they done that? Because they love doing what they do. THAT's their inspiration, their motiviation.

Artists don't rely on other people for their motivation to be artists. If you need me to coddle you into pixelling, maybe you should stop bitching, reconsider whether or not art is for you, and make a life choice, mmkay?

Okay... I'm going to type VEEEEEEEEEeerrry slowly. I'll make a little site browsing tutorial just for you because you're so very special. You can do it!

--> Go to Sprite Art dot com
--> Click on the big dragon in the middle of the page
--> Look on the naviagation and click the little sprite head that says "TUTORIALS"
--> Since you can't obviously read the description st0ven gives on the side of the page, let me explain it for you. Each of the little portraits you see is a section of tutorials. For the tutorial you're looking for, since you can't spare 5 minutes to check under each head, click on the first guy with the blue hair in the second row.
--> See the little sprite characters, the first tutorial on the side, that says RPG characters? That's where you click.
--> Ta da! RPG characters!

Each of the tutorials is under a category of difficulty, if you're just starting out, you can easily go through each of the samuari's list of tuts and find the ones that are for beginner pixellers under Basic Pixel Techniques. st0ven site is slightly confusing but not THAT confusing, if you actually WANT to find something to try. Before you go into the more difficult ones like Ambient lighting, you're going to have to practice the easiest ones first.

People here get frustrated because you expect pixel art skills to come to you easy with minimal practise. It's not going to happen, alright? Great artists are not born, they grow over time. They LEARN their skills, they HONE their skills. It's not a one two three process.

We react sarcastically and angrily to you because no matter how hard we try to make you understand, all you seem to do is give excuses and expect us to magically pull our skills out of our asses and shove them in your head. People in this community are willing to help, but we're not going to baby you. If you continue to give excuses, you're just going to get frustration in return.

So you need to make a descision, are you willing to continue trying and trying, despite how bad or good you may be, to improve your skills? Or are you going to bitch and moan every time you get an off tone, a crooked line, or a f**ked up shading method?

Because basic lighting isn't unique to spriting or pixel art; it's a part of basic art. SpriteArt will not teach you this. I would just looking up tutorials on lighting yourself, but here's a good start: http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/light.htm

this is your last chance flame.  learn to accept crits and show respect (no sarcastic comments included) to those trying to help/educate you, otherwise you dont have to worry about leaving as you will be banned instead.

you can easily solve all this with a respectful question "what exactly is pillow shading?  what are some other forms of shading?  where can i find some better tutorials?" and so on...  its not hard to ask for clarification.  if you do, i know for a fact that people will be much more willing to help you.

you are proving yourself to be like every other n00b that comes here and says they dont understand and take crits as insults when YOU ask for them.  i am sick and tired of seeing that.

you may want to consider going to Pixel, they are based for the real beginner.  and if you cant understand what we are saying , then you are more of a novice than i thought.

Please, please reconsider your usage of this forum. There are certainly many respectable artists here who try hard to grasp the concepts presented to them in the resources so handily well written.

You say those resources are hard for a beginner to follow? Well, if they are, then check out other tuts or something, don't come bitching to everybody about how *insert name here* is inept in teaching *this subject*. Also, take note of the community, largely one who has learned to pixel through these tuts with NO TROUBLE at all.

"the best sprite website" isn't completely true of st0ven's spriteart, by the way. There are MANY styles of pixel art, and in general, art is judged often based on personal taste. What st0ven provides is a helpful resource. Whether you use it or not is up to you.

That said, I want to emphasize that it IS a very good resource:

All of the techniques present in this edit can be found perusing through his site. Now, you can't immediately grasp everything going on here.
Learn it little by little, degree by degree, and stop complaining.

I never said it was the best friggin sprite website, did I? Grow up, for god's sake.

If you go and attempt some RPG sprites, I think it can teach you a bit about shading and choosing a light source. Like I said, no one here is going to do your pixels for you. You don't learn anything by it at all. But since you so politely asked, here's a TUTORIAL you might fine useful.

I thought that pillow shading was when you take the darkest color, then made a border around the outside, then kept doing that until you get to the center. im sorry but that is not what i have done.

if you look closer at mine you will notice that its not pillow shaded, its darker near the bottom of the spikes.

also these are prites, which dont have a true lightsource because they move around and unless the lightsourcce is attached to their body, it would move. so instead of making a different sprite for each couple inches, you have to make one that has an all-around light source.

Flame, it is pillowshaded, very subtly, but it is noticable. If someone says it is, please try your best to accept their judgements, rather than defending yourself then ignoring everyone else's comments.

I do hope you will improve, in both your pixelling and forum civility.

He is right there. Well you have two options when using sprite flipping.
A. use a more pillowshaded method(looks worse overall but is consistant when flipping)
B. Use a directional light. (looks better overall but looks obveous when flipped)

Why the hell are you using likenesses that you have no right to anyways? Make an original game like me. The world has too many unlicensed Sonic and Mario clones already I doubt you will bring anything remotely interesting, compared to the professional games.

Yo flameruler. i suggest you learn how to define shapes with colours instead of relying on lines to do the work. check out your face in the mirror and really focus on how the light is hitting the different planes of the face. if you don't have a mirror then the pj gallery is full of images that you can use to see how light works. if you want to avoid the haters in the forum feel free to pm me and i'll give you some c&c on whatever piece you're working on.
you're just lucky i'm an emotionless robot who cannot love or hate.

a few negative neds shouldn't stop you from listening to the other crits in this thread. there have been many valid points stated, I suggest you attempt to use a bit of it. as for the ones trying to put you down, just ignore them if you really feel it's disrupting your art-making.

we're here to help not pick fights or anything so let's all be friends! :D

GWAAAH.

...please, please ban him?

To... reinforce my point, Flameruler13, I'm going to re-iterate some of the crits so far, so you can see all the useful things people have said that you lobbed to the side and ignored.

"Try use less colours, 20 is too many"
"Not a bad start, you might consider not using linear lighting."
"...higher contrast"
"Hue shift, use better colours"

Mmkay, you get the idea. People are GIVING YOU C&C. Many are OFFERING ENCOURAGEMENT AS WELL. Notice that after you don't do anything with these crits and brush them off (That website makes no sense) that people start getting a little irritated. 'cept Souly, 'cause souly has past experience with you.

At the moment, in my opinion, you don't deserve sh*t. You SHOULD leave, go learn some basics of colour theory, forms, an' other such fun basics. People here treat you how they treat you based on how they see you. It is not OUR fault you come across as some retarded newbie that wants everything on a silver platter. Notably, some of us (I.E. not me) are gracious enough to NOT want to ram a rustic 2X4 down your throat...

Yeah, I got distracted. I, for one, would be in a state of irrepressible bliss if you left. That's all I have to say.

your saying the same thing as everyone else. all those comment were for MT. now i tried a new sprite but i got c&C, replied to it, and am now working on improving. how about instead of wasting your time on making posts that I'm not gonna read because its the same as everyone else, comment on PIXELART. isn't that what this forums for? not being an asshole. Pixel art.

i cant even find any crits because i dont want to read sh*t like your post.
your acting like a two year old. like one of those noobs who just comes in and say f**kyouallmutherf**kersburninmotherf**keringhellihateyouall.

He meant to say the same as everyone else.  He was reitterating the crits you've been given, because for all we f**king know you haven't learned a damn thing from anything that anyone has said.  Stop defending yourself, this is a WIP thread, we are telling you HOW it sucks, so fix it.

and feron>you (hell, even shark>you), so lay off what I can only assume is an attempt at sarcasm.  Suck it up, swallow any pride, and pixel.  Stop arguing in this thread, and for God's sake, use what we've given you, stop the bitching and moaning, and update.
