I'm not trying to be combative or defensive or anything like that, I'm just really curious: why are so many pieces criticized as "too many colors"? I'm still fairly new to pixel art communities outside of doofy, no-standards dolling type stuff, so I've never seen that used as a criticism. I'm wondering how "fewer colors = superior" works aside from things like pallette challenges.

Pixel art comes from videogames, or are used for things that require
limited palletes. That's the tradition. Now, even if it just for a
drawing, a skilled artist will be able to bring the best results with
less colors, that forces to use techniques like dithering and color
reusage. Using a lot of colors is easy, but the very concept of pixel
art is telling us to use each pixel wisely.
Of course the opinion of "too many colors" varies in each person. But for a general idea, if a tone is too similar to another, there is no use for it. |
