Some of you may or my not be familiar with this game, but it was one of the first action rpgs of its time. It was a fantastic game for the NES that had an engaging story, but the combat was considered by many to be a little too easy, and at the same time having poor collision detection. A few friends and I have decided to give this thing the makeover it deserves. The programming and music side are completely done and accounted for, and all we need is art.
So far, I am the only artist, and there is simply too much for me to do considering everything we want in the game.
What we're looking for:
-One or more artists to help with design and animation of sprites, as well as a tile creator.
-You will not be required to work too hard, but we do have a standard we would like to live up to, and would like to see regular progress. However, we won't be asking for anything too extreme.
-Our main goal as of right now is to get all of the first area done. This includes a town with citizens, two fully animated enemies (one of which is nearly complete), and animated hero.
-Later goals include completing the art for the rest of the game, including opening scenes, detailed character portraits, and possibly detailed bestiary pinups.
Artistic info and restrictions:
-You are more or less free to do what you want, however, we are going for a certain style, and may request changes as we see fit.
-We are going for a higher res format, with 64x64 tiles. This means that most sprites, excluding bosses which can go larger, would generally be around 128 high and 64 wide, or smaller. The game screen is going to be at around 800x600.
-The game is a top downish view like Secret of Mana. This is not isometric.
Other Info:
-Again, this is not a paid deal. If we could, we would, but that is simply not an option right now. We are very serious about this project and we guarantee that this is not something your time will be wasted on, like some games that simply fall throughand are never finished.
-Everyone who participates will be fully credited on the game and the website which will be created upon completion of the demo (area 1) of the game. While this may not be a paying gig, we believe that if we are able to create a game of the caliber we think we are capable of, this could be a huge opportunity to get your name out there and known.
If you have any questions at all, please email me at ccliatt@ccjax.com or simply respond to this message.

Of course I remember you
![]() If you like, i can repost the blue slime here, but it is the one I posted in the WIP section that you commented on. The other enemy is a weretiger. Something like this, but smaller of course. I was fooling around with the concept at first, but something like this would be great. If you feel like you want to make changes to him, go for it. Again, the size we're going for on these guys is 64x128.
![]() As for villagers, I don't have anything for you to go by right now, but we're thinking a sort of rustic/colonial/poor look for the first village. I posted the hero in his jumpsuit as a basic template for the size and whatnot of the villagers.
Let me know if you need anything else. Oh, and there is no limit for your palette, unless want to do it that way.

Woah. Thats cool. I'll see what I can do. Oh, and I'd love to work on Mr. slime (heheheh). But the thing is, I only have paint, and I am not farmiliar with GraphicsGale... so... I can't really animate.
Oh, do I need to resize the Weretiger to 64x128, or can I use the size you have? Edited by BlackDragon - 11 December 2006 at 10:01am |

If you want to throw some improvements on the slime guy, go for it. If you need the individual frames I can send them to you via email or something. It won't be until later though, I don't have it with me now that I am back at work. I get off around 530-600pm eastern time.
Tiger dude will need to be resized, but we're going for that kind of feel. Not being able to animate is ok with me, if you can make a spritesheet that I can animate myself to look over.

Can I make him like, 128x128 or 64x80 or something because he will look waaay tall. As defined in your tiger he is more square-shaped, as in size. Didja get that?
Spritesheets are the thing I was going for too. Would you like me to, I dunno, make him punch kick or bite or something? I can't really help on the animations if I don't know what to animate!!!
As for the time, I live in the east too, so no need to define that! For the time being anyway. I'm not moving, its just other people might join in.

Right on. You can go with the the 64x80 to see how it compares, and then if you want we can then decide if he should be bigger or not.
For the tiger there were actually two attacks we wanted to do, you only have to do one for now if you like. One is a pouncing attack, just like a housecat or lion, would get down, wiggle, then leap and slash or bite. The other attack, is a simpler standing attack, where it would be like he is opening his arms as if to hug, and then makes a quick motion as if hugging himself, doing a sort of double slash.
We'll be just mirroring for now for left to right movement, so you only would need 3 directions of animation up, down, and either left or right.

Heh. Nice description. I can totally see that tiger now!
A couple of questions:
How many more of these monsters do I have to do?
Can the animations be short or do thay have to be fluid(big things are harder to animate)?
So it turns out its not turned-based?
Why am I still asking questions?
PS. I now have two projects now. Yours and mine. Don't expect anything right away... I'm sick (sorta). I gotta go to school in the morning, and catch up. I'll be free this Saturday and untill New Year. I'll try to fit you in my schedule. I'm going on vacation so don't freak if you don't hear from me, ok? I'll notify you. It will work out though, no worries! Edited by BlackDragon - 11 December 2006 at 3:38pm |

well, our main goal is just to have the first area done, and test that out a bit before we rush out all the art. So, the only enemies in the "demo" will be this tiger and the blue slime. Once we get past that stage, I want to say there will be around 25-30 more enemies, including bosses.
For the animations, right now it can be fairly shor, but not too jerky if possible. Al the refining can come later.
The game is not turn based, it is more of an action rpg along the lines of Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Mana, Zelda, etc.
And you keep asking questions because it is better to ask than assume.

Haaaah... thank Gawd. I can concentrate on the tiger. Then it will be to the best of my abilities!
![]() For the "hugging" animation, it will be quite fast, right? So here is my frame... uh... whatever. Here's my plans:
Frame 1: Idle
Frame 2: Elbows bent, stern look on face
Frame 3: Ready to strike with arms fully in the air
Frame 4: Strike. Blur, maybe? Slash lines in the sky?
Frame 5: Blinky slash lines!!!
Frame 6: Idle once more
And more ideas for the animation:
1. Shoulder blades go in
2. Take a step f/w
Some Ideas for the pounce:
1. Have it close its mouth, then open as if roaring (this automatically applies if the animation is biting)
2. Have it swipe its claws down (raise both hands, bring down simultaniously, OR have it done alternatively, but in one fluid motion).
3. Perhaps later, when it uses this attack I can animate him so he falls as if body slamming you, then has to get up
EDIT: For the blue slime, maybe we could have it bounce when it is a hammer while heading towards the hero. Or, before he turns into the hammer, we could "squish" the little guy into a puddle. Then his center flows upward to create the hammer top. Shortly after the handle is created, and we have our hammer. Then, for our attack, he rotates his head and body so he is laying flat. Again a rotation to straighten him out, then the splash, and he forms back to the slime we all know and love. Does this make sence? If it doesn't, think of how you would swing a mallet. Just an idea. It may or may not look good, but thats your call on what you are trying to make this game look and feel like.
Phew. That was really long.
Well, I have to go. I hope we can finish this game!!!

The ideas you listed are almost exactly what I was thinking in my head for these attacks.
Looking forward to what you do with it.
