Aside from having no caffine Sprite could be judged as a perfect soda beverage. It has a clean dry taste to it and I find it's clarity quite striking. If I hadn't known better I would mistake it for a pr4emium vodka.

It's very good, yes, but the dark colas are great as a separate genre of fizzdrink.

Agreed. I find the tastes of citruis sodas too heavy and nausiating in nature such as grape and orage soda. Far too sugery for the refined drinker. The darker sodas do have their place on the refined palette however.

I usually would recomend a box of Good & Plenty candies with your darker sodas while a nice chocolate complements sprite well.
Due to the nature of sprite I prefer it be served in a chilled white mug. The color of the mug should complement the visual presence well.

I agree with the mug comment, but I don't like good and plenties standalone so I can't really give a valid unbiased opinion about them incombination with dark soda. Dark sodas in a mug tend to look too much like a flat drink; I like something a bit rougher on the inside like a plastic cup so the carbon dioxide bubbltes have a place to hold onto while forming, giving it that carbonated look.

I find some sodas are good mixed with certain fruit juices; a slight tint of grape juice or fruit punch in a pinch gives it a lot more interesting flavor. Orange juice doesn't mix well I bet, so I haven't tried it.

Well, I can validate your point-plastic provides a good sticking surface for the carbonation bubbles but it lacks insulation needed to keep the beverage cold for longer than about 33 minutes.  Of course, the finer pop vendors sell mugs that are made of plasitic and can be frozen.

I think most people will drink a plastic cup-full of soda in less than 33 minutes, though, if the soda is what they're actually concentrating on. Unfortunately most Americans just get the 96 oz jug and gulp it down with their cheeseburgers. While a simple burger with cheese might provide welcome contrast, the toppings like relish, mustard, ketchup and the numerous others will just ruin the soda, especially if there's backwash involved. At any rate I think one should drink the soda uncontaminated to get acquainted with it before messing with the flavor/

You are very educated in the finer arts of dining. Yes it's a shame that people consume soda as a side dish when it could easily stand on it's own. There is so much flavor to be gleamed from the elements that make up these splendid beverages. The syrup the carbonation and the general taste of the aerated drink on the palette. Drinking with second rate food is like living only 20 minutes of your life and saying you've seen it all.

That's a great simile to describe it. Unfortunately for society the rest of your post is just as accurate. I think the world needs a way for those with true appreciation for the taste of carbonated beverages to convene and share their knowledge of the methods of enjoyal of these fantastic substances. The fact that they contain caffeine is an added benefit, that while not unfortunate, may attract drug addicts. Luckily the world's soda companies are careful and don't let in much rifraff when they add the caffeine.

I would now like to discuss the proper quantity to drink. I find myself indulging in 2 liter sized bottles simply out of boredom. I know that this is not the best way to enjoy the body of my drink of choice, oftentimes the soda looses its flavor after the second cupful. I'd advise keeping the doses down to 2 cups or less.

I usually down a cup about 3x the size of your standard shot and then come back in a minute or two for another half of that. I personally try to keep a variety of soda in stock but mostly I drink Coke or Royal Crown Cola. Pepsi is also a commoner of my 'fridge. I don't like orange soda or grape much, but if it comes to those two grape is my choice. Orange soda just sends out a message of artificiality I don't like.

I agree with all of what you have just stated. I have never sampled Royal Crown Cola, I'll have to have my sources import some for my dining pleasure. It's true that there is a sense of artificiality with your generic citrus colas. It's much like drinking from a centerpiece plastic fruit with some artificial flavors added.

Though it is slightly off from the fine discussion of sodas in which I enjoy partaking in so greatly, I'd like to mention that I have, on occasion, been fooled by such plastic centerpiece fruits and realized my error only when the droplets of water on them felt hard and plastic. My good friend has such a centerpiece and I wish he didn't.

Returning to the subject at hand, I'd like to inquire as to your preferences on ice: Do you prefer none, crushed, or some specific procedure?

You are indeed brave to touch on such a sensitive topic. I usually will used my chilled mug technique to keep the beverage frosty while not diluting it's overall bouquet. If no white porcelain mug is at hand I may pour the soda through a series of ice cubes and mesh grates.

Really, I consider the common ice cube a double edged sword. True, it provides an essential service but also can ruin the overall presentation while providing said service. The tool of temperature control should be pacifistic like a friar not a tyrant barbarian like your common ice cube. I would suggest pacifistic devices such as the chilled mug or the ever popular plastic ice cubes.

You post an very common question, "How do I know what find sodas are available in my region?". The answer may be found within the hollowed pages of our new book The Traveling Soda Companion. You can view sodas from around the world in glorious full color display! Gaze at the lite and playfully Childhood favorites in your area. Or if you like something more robust look at the darker imports from countries such as Africa. We present you with the tools to put together a 3 course soda dinner for you and your loved ones. The book will be out in mid May and should sell for around $29.97 USD.

I do think that the chilled mug approach works well. When it comes to chilling mugs, however, I find that a nice glass mug works much better than your average ceramic coffee mug. The glass ones also are generally a better size for soda; if you're taking the step up from a small sampling glass you might as well get your money's worth, not just a slightly bigger coffee cup.

As for the plastic ice cubes, I've been unable to find such a thing at my local soda accessoy retailer. I searched the shelf with sweeteners and the one with 2-liter wine bottles but to no avail. Where did you come by your set of plastic cubes?

You do bring up an interesting topic with the mention of alternative flavors. While you will often find grape, lemon, and orange sodas, some want more variety. There are few options other than to mix your own flavoring syrups and buy simple carbonated water to flavor. The products of this process may vary more than is beneficial, however, and this is the reason such techniques as outsourcing are prevalent in the homebrew industry.

I still use Father's distillery and my grandmother's syrup blends. I like the clean and pure drinks of the 1950's. Sodas were so simple and unadulterated during that time of Americana. Today's sodas aren't prepared by hand like the humble soda jerk of yesteryear could do. You may find it difficult to find the plastic ice cubes at your local soda vendor. If you are willing you have to go to a lower class place like a camping retailer. I feel that much of today's sodas have lost their heritage, the glass bottle was the perfect way to enjoy this rare and fine delight. The bottle acted as a sort of crusader keeping the heathen warm air away from the most wholesome beverage inside.

Keep your loved ones next to you and enjoy a cold soda, the way our fore fathers intended.

I've also heard of other Thanksgiving-inspired sodas... they were like potatoes n' gravy, and cranberry I think... It was on TV. They got people to taste them! Usually they gagged, or made a face.

I used to drink a lot of soda.. then I stopped. It really wasn't that hard, just don't buy any.

There's more alternatives than just water you know.  I drink lots of Lipton Diet Iced Citrus Green Tea.
I love it, even though it tasted odd at first.
