I needed a break from the Deleter enemy, so I decided to do some background stuff for the 2. Level of HZ. The big asteroids where altered by an Ancient civilization to serve as platforms, and also I will just need the space for turrets like the one already present in the mockup.

Still missing is the last Background layer, a starscape... I'll add that as soon when I'm happy with the foreground stuff. I'll also add some more background asteroids. I'll add some flesh-thingies too, when I am finished with the shading of the 2. platform, since I'll probably will reuse it in the level.

as always, C&C highly appreciated :)

This is looking good. Funny how shmup enthusiasts share about 4-5 forums. I don't say this much but I don't see anything wrong. I can see a scrolling star layer making this game look killer.

the dithering on the L-hand large asteroid throws me off a bit - it is very clean and perfect, which makes it look less organic.

i would also consider a stronger light source for the more foreground asteroids to make them pop a little more while also possibly introducing a reason to add a bit more color.

really cool start though, i look forward to seeing this progress.

Maybe a stronger highlight on the asteroids? or possibly make it less flat, and more random. It's lovely though. really rockin.

Looking great for the most part. I fully agree about the lighting making things look inorganic.

huzza! an update... hope it's ok to bump this to the first Page

Started to shade the Right asteroid chunk. Also I tried to roughen up the left asteroid a bit more. Actualy I made the 2 large chunks connectable on the left and right side.  here's an example:

The Nebulae/Stars in the background are not final, as the current version is a color-reduced and altered satelite image.  I will replace it, when I figure out how to exactly get that look, and still make it tileable; The final starscape will probably be as big as 2 screens, that could be tiled on the Upper and lower edge.

Maybe someone has an idea how to shade it...

The "foreground" Asteroids are actualy one layer below the platform, so shading them more brightly would only distract the player.

-There will be shootable foregrounds asteroids, shaded with a different pallete to make it obviouse that they are shootable.

The flatness will be further roughed up, when the grown flesh/bone stuff is in there... expect an update on that soon... that will also give some more color-contrast.

oh, and the purple orb in the middle of the screen is not a background-element. It will be a enemy for the shown level.

Bumping is always okay if you're updating your WIP... especially when it's a kickass update like this. Awesome work!

I like this alot, especially the way the asteroids are like islands. The colours used in that eye thing look great aswel.

However i think your ship looks ever so slightly pillowed, and the edges of the 'islands' look a bit too smooth? A bit like melted wax.

Keep it up man.

thank you for the feedback!
@ Larwick: thanks for the info, I will look at the player ship again. I'll also remove the "wax-ness".

here's a small update.

The flesh thingies will expand more...

and just for fun an image with the player being in quite some danger:

the orb thingies are a new type of mine that is immobile, but will cause adjacent mines to explode as well!
here's the little mine thingy with it's animation:

keep the comments comming! :)

I noticed that the long stretchy bit doesn't seem well anchored between the asteroids. It looks like it would fall off easily. Take the ends and make them really dig in deep.
