I think there are a few aspects of this which would make it hard to include in the game. Mainly the dithering, which in animated sprites is usually a nono, especially since most of the sprites will have a cartoony smooth or cel-shaded look about them. I think you could also clean up the lines and such, and try out some AA and more exaggerated features.

That's wonderful! I really like the design and cute animation. Made me think of some sort of swarm of little octopuses which could be some kind of trap that hides the screen for a little bit therefore causing the player to crash into enemies etc.

You're right there, thanks for the submission, i really like it. The outlined one would be chosen over the non-outlined one i guess. I like it's chunky look, and i can imagine these covering some of the seabed so if the player falls too low they get blown back up.

Maybe someone could make an underwater explosion that can be used for anything. If it needs to be big, we could use multiple explosions instead, like they do on space shooter bosses.

That octopus animation has awesome movements. The rock fish is a great idea.

Great work guys, a nice addition i think. The update is a nice improvement, if minor, but the palette is far better suited. Some critisism on the swimming animation, as there is not enough body movement at the moment.
 
Nice attack animation ceddo, i think i could see this working well in-game.

Jalonso commented on my attack saying that it doesn't really look rockish, as far as colors are concerned. Maybe we should make it more similar to the first palette? (even though I love the palette now, it may now be the most appropriate one for a rockfish)

No, I liked the color a lot. I only meant that while idle and on the ground it could be grey or desaturated then it changes colors as it jumps into the fish.

This is where I meant they grey/desaturated colors could be. Top line where it has no eyes and the bottom left where its a rock. Colors start changing on the 4th on the top so that by the time it gets to your jump its colored.
Maybe your animation could have those five frames before the jump if you want to play with it.

Great stuff guys. Won't go into detail on my thoughts just yet, but i'm glad to see this picking up.
 
Just to let you guys know my new bombfish is coming along, although i'll definetely need some feedback once it's done because the redesign is fairly different from the original. Not sure how long it'll be till i show.

There have been lots of cool small enemy sprites so far, but we need some big monstas that are harder to kill (most of the sprites we have so far would take one shot to kill).

I was thinking, for the thin passageways through the coral reefs, about a big clam sprite that repeatedly opens and close its shell. When open, it would fill the height of the passageway and you wouldn't be able to get through, but when closed you can swim through. Does that sound good?

I like the idea. I should get working on this project myself. I have a book of fish, it has great refs that would help a lot.

This is what i have so far, thoughts? Apart from the terrible shading on the bomb and the huge amount of colours due to the fading to red, i quite like it at the moment.

I agree, I like the previous version more. In the latest, the transition between fish/bomb is a bit too unreal :)

Both look very nice IMO, but the new one looks more polished and much bombisher. I bet you could salvage the old explode frames though, at least partially.

Haha, thanks guys. I think the old one looks really poor though. And i was actually thinking of doing a new explosion purely out of bubbles, if that makes sense, one which is more uniform and without outlines (being an effect, rather than a sprite).

That will be tough, but I'm sure the effect will look awesome :) Make the bubbles have a fiery glow at the beginning at the explosion though, or else it will look too weak. I think it will be hard to represent an explosion with bubbles :)

Haha yeah, i basically meant that there would be no fire or smoke, just the power shown through the water, then i guess i'll have bubbles rising up instead of smoke. I really don't know if i can do it though, if anyone else wants to try, please do. Also, the fiery glow sounds like a good idea, or a bright flash or something.

Even if an explosion would happen underwater and most of the 'offshoots' were bubbles, you'd still have a fiery burst of some kind (see any 007 movie).

maybe the boss shark guy should be smoking a cigar, but it would have bubbles comming out insted of smoke.

an aquatic verson of PJ.  i gave him sunglasses/gun to be in keeping with the mobster theme.  he used to have a tie, but it looked stupid.

if anyone thinks they can do a better job on the gun, that would be hardcore.

does anyone think this is worth animating?
