Pixel Joint Forum: what is acceptable? "grid technique"

   Really 2 things

1. Long ago in art class, teacher had use make a grid on a piece of paper and then make a grid over a picture. She wanted to teach us to look at the lines and how they are in relation to each other, not an eye or a mouth or what not. Pay attention to the curves and how it curves, etc. Is this an ok technique?

2. Is it not acceptable to take any colors from reference picture? 

In my recent piece, I took a couple colors from the reference, twicked some, and made a few so it would mesh well together. I gridded up the original reference and made a grid on my piece and used them to compare each other. I did not trace anything. I used mspaint to make it (I use mspaint for almost everything I make, imageready for animations). Because if I did anything wrong, that I'm not aware of, it was using the two things listed above? 

I really want to know what was so wrong with this because i did not cheat on this. i did this pixel by pixel using a reference that I really enjoyed the colors of.

	I don't think there's anything wrong with the grid technique (Chuck Close used it) just as long as it's not done all the time, for the sake of the learning process of building up a whole piece on your own. I think it's acceptable to take colours from a reference (with tweaking). Again, just as long as it's not all the time, so that you can learn to build your own palette. When I first looked at your piece and compared it to the original, I didn't think there was any cheating, but I guess that's going to be disputed.

	I found no tracing or cheating involved with your pixel at all. I did look at it closely, btw. Maybe you have more than 16 colors (rule)? Edited by jalonso - 29 April 2007 at 6:21am

The grid technique has been used by artists for at least five hundred years. normally it's used for re-sizing thou. i work at a museum and handle many different paintings and drawings and you would be amazed at how many paintings were re-sized or transfered from one media to another with this technique. In more recent years traditional artists have moved to projectors to transfer their drawings to canvas or wall. (its much faster) David hockney and sol lewitt both used projectors later in their careers after using the grid technique for years.

	Indeed even Michelangelo I believe used this grid technique. No shame in its use at all. btw, there are 16 colors, you got cheated here kendi64, imo. Don't let it get to you at all, k. Use the good and bad of this to better your next pixel :D

I wanted to try out these challenges to help give me an inspiration point and try new things. I guess I just try harder and try to step outside the box more next time
