    Posted: 20 June 2007 at 4:49am
Hello there. I tried a search for this but couldn't find anything on this matter.

I want to experiment by creating a stereoscopic pixelart (you have to wear 3D glasses to view it). Is it okay if I applied a stereoscopic filter/command/attribute/layer (thing) on a peice of pixel art I created? Or would I have to "pixel" the stereoscopic filter/command/attribute/layer (thing)? If I do need to pixel it, then could someone give me some pointers as I have absolutely no idea how to go about.

Well...I do now it's about splitting RGB values and greyscales of some kind, but how to actually "pixel it", I don't know. I have skimmed through the net but they all apply filters of some kind. I just don't want people to think it's unethical or cheating.

thanks

You could just upload the one without the effects, and link to the one with teh effects. That'd be the simplest thing to do

I think the best idea is to study stereoscopic images and try mimicking the blue/red offsets to your art by hand and see if you achieve the same effect.
That is if you have stereo glasses :).

by the way thanks for the great idea, i'll be getting my pair of stereo glasses right now on ebay. seriously.

You could do it like this... for the image in the gallery, you upload a side-by-side stereo image. It will be pure pixel art and you won't need 3D glasses... you only have to cross their eyes properly. This can be tricky at first but it's pretty easy to do after some practice.

Then in the description, you can link to the anaglyph, which is what you would need 3D glasses for like you described yourself. To make this, I think you can simply take the two images of the side-by-side stereoscope, colour one red and the other cyan, and overlay them on top of each other. I might be wrong about this because I can't even remember the last time I used 3D glasses. But Wikipedia should be a fantastic resource either way.

I wish you good luck! I'd love to see what you can do and I might even try something like this myself sometime.

I tried this a few yrs back, but as ISO doesn't contain much depth.....it doesn't quite work.

There's no magic filter to turn a single piece into 3d though. You need to pixel the left & right eye images seperately (google stereoscopic drawing). Then either place them side by side (a stereo pair for cross eye viewing) or color & overlay them (using screen mode).

I'd give it another go except for 2 problems:
1) You need glasses which not everyone has a pair...
2) OR you need to cross your eyes, which not everyone can do.
so out of all the ppl that might view your work...only a few could might be able to see it. It's like the good old "magic eye" craze if your old enough to remember.

Thank you very much for the reponses.

I think it's probably best not to go for the cross eye viewing technique as I may want to animate it which would cause nasty eyestrain. I've seen some tutorials of making stereoscopic images on PaintShop Pro and photoshop, so what I'll do is have the actual image in the gallery, and just have a link to the stereoscopic image as suggested.

There is also this software, but I have yet to try it.

I also need to order some glasses, but I should have something next month to post when I get back to UK.

@Rodder: You are right about me limiting the audience for viewing, but it would be cool to try out this interesting process.

There is such a program for macs so there must be one for peecees.

I have used this in the past and works pretty good, especially for 3D glasses:

3D Maker allows you to take any picture and apply various 3D filters to it. These filters a 3D glasses filter. Simply open a picture, select the region to apply to filter to. Select a type, adjust the X & Y offsets and then choose convert.

System Requirements: mac only, 3D Maker is shareware. ($5)
