Hey!
I'd like to get feedback on a hedgehog animation I made. It's only two frames. There's also a background that's supposed to resemble a game. There are two versions of the background: one with harry and one without. Any CC is extremely welcome :)
Edit: newest:

That background is adorable; beautiful colors and a strangely pleasing scene. The hedgehog is really cute, too.
As for the animation, it's amazingly effective for only two frames. He really looks like he's scrunching forward a tiny bit at a time. Within the constraints, the only thing I would criticize is the inconsistency in color between the two frames. In one frame he has a middle area full of the single pixels with a light shade of tan, but in the other frame that entire area loses all the light pixels. It just doesn't make much sense visually and looks more like an oversight. Overall, good job, I really like it. |

Awesome job. To me the change in between the two frames actually makes it more fluid and realistic. Even though its not a porcupine it has that quill movement going on. The only thing that can be nitpicked is how much the chracter blends into the scene and almost gets lost. You could raise the dark green where the apples are just enough to show off the hedgehog?

I'm almost willing to agree with you on the quill movement, Jaonso, but it just seems to drastic for me to justify the change that way. I considered the very same thing before I posted, but in the end I'm pretty sure it would look better if the light pixels were shifted around instead of being replaced by darker pixels, but I'm definitely no expert.

I'm no expert either and considered your point for a bit before visualizing in my mind how the animation would look in the scene. Considering its only 2 frames and doesn't stand out much from the BG...hmmm...maybe were both right...maybe marilii will show the animation on the BG.

Howdy. I'd say the biggest issue is how much the hedgehog blends in. Try upping the contrast of it, adding strong highlights and shadow, to make it stick out. Same with the apples, though they're not quite as bad.

Alrighty then. I tried to take into account all of your suggestions. Thank you SO much for helping me :)
The light pixels disappearing was, indeed, my try to show the hedgehog's movement. I tried to soften it a bit with this edit. I've also upped the contrast on the hedgehog and the apples and expanded the darkest grass area. I also animated the image with both the hedgehog and the background.
I'll be glad to receive more CC :)
Edit: P.S. the animation doesn't have to be two frames. If you think adding more frames would improve the animation, let me know. Edited by marilii - 06 July 2007 at 6:58am |

The more frames you can make the better the animation in fluidity. The least amount of frames that still carry all the needed movement the more interesting and technically better the pixel. I wouldn't add any other frame here because you achieved the objective using the most minimal possible frames. A feat worthy of praise.
The BG update is wonderful and helps the hedgehog stand out. |

Looking nice. The hedgehog's shading is a little overtaken by its texture, I did an edit to give you and idea of how to strengthen the shading;
![]() Fiddled with the apple just for fun, heh |

Thank you for the wonderful words of support!
I fiddled with the hedgehog and the apples a bit, although, on a scale as small as the apples it's extremely hard not to copy edits directly :S
Here's what I have, though:

I dig
The leaves look noisy and unshaded. Here's some examples from the gallery of how you could go about them; Etc, there's endless ways to do it, anyway. The background is troubling me. The colours of objects get less saturated, and brighter, as if melding into a white mist, then as it gets further everything darkens and recedes into a dark brown. The two 'mists' are clashing. I say tone down that white mist effect alot, and focus instead on the light levels and shading. Edited by EyeCraft - 08 July 2007 at 4:54pm |

Hello Marilii,
Sorry, I could not resist. He is having enough when eating one apple and moves on a little bit slower. I think you have a problem when dear Harry moves along the trees as he has almost identical colors. You could use an outline or you might want to change the colors of the trees. I like the darker background much better! But maybe you should have a look at the way the branches are drawn at the moment It looks like all the leaves are BEHIND the branches. I made a little (bad) edit in the animation so that it overlapped a little bit. I hide the apples in the tree a little bit behind leaves, as yours looksed like they were put on the tree with glue ![]() (No offense intended!!!!) Hopefully you can use some of my comments. I for one thing had a chance of working on a little animation with more than 5 frames for a change Ok, it was just a thirty minute edit! ![]() Good luck with your project! Kind regards from M.E. |

Lol! That's a brilliant edit M.E.! Though not quite the idea I had in mind for Harry.
For some strange reason I decided that I wanted to see the whole of the foreground tree...So here it is. Now's your chance to tell me to reshade it because I don't understand lighting :S
I also tried to fix the branches of the trees in the background and hide the apples a bit. Thank you for the suggestions!
I believe I will be working on Harry next...I'm planning a rolling animation for him.
So, here are the images:

Erm....So...I decided that a rolling Harry would be ridiculous and that he will, in fact, be eating the apples as well. I originally meant that he'd be collecting apples and eating flies but...well...that changed.
So here are the latest:
I finished the animation and added a status bar sort of thingy. Any comments welcome. Also, can I/should I submit both the still image and the animation to the gallery? And should I post the still image with the status bar and Harry/with just Harry/just the background?
Any additional C+C also welcome.

Just post the mockup animation, the still serves no real purpose. This has come out really great. You may want to link to this thread in your description for those who wish to see the progress.

Nice stuff! The progress you've made is really great. I really like the hud.
This is probably too late, but here's an edit regarding the tree; There was alot of noise on the trunk and roots. Take the time to AA and make sure you aren't getting any heavy shadow against heavy highlight cuz it'll scramble things most of the time. Fiddled with a few other things. Ignore any colour change that happened in the backdrop, that was a side effect of my changing foreground colours and such. Or not, its up to you. Edited by EyeCraft - 13 July 2007 at 9:37am |

Oh darn. I love your edit. But I think I'm finished with this piece (I simply don't want to animate it all over again. It still gives be nightmares, lol).
Thank you so very much for your help, though. In fact, I thank everyone over again - you've all been amazing :D
