I'm considering contracting an artist to do a fairly large amount of pixel art. However, I'm not an artist and have little experience with contract work.

My questions are these: as a newcomer, how can I best evaluate the fair price to ask for a given work of custom art? Which things should I consider when evaluating the cost of such a work? Are there standard-ish, ballpark prices that are common in such contracts?

As an secondary question, what is the usual or recommended way to invoice custom art - X amount of cash per hour or X amount of cash per piece?
