Well I'm trying out some new forms of dithering in my pieces.

I only know a few. So if anybody can post a good link that explains them or shows them well it'd be appreciated.

Well i mean, once you understand normal dither you can start messing with it a bit, simply adding bigger circles than single pixels in places to give a texture, same with adding hollowed circles or even squares or other shapes. I've seen some people like Helm use a cloudy poofy styled dither which is basically just large circles and cloudlike shapes merging with the other colour... if that makes sense. Basically just fiddle with the concept, you should come up with something. Practice makes perfect.

Yeah. Lately I've been messing around and it gives it this sort of rough scratched texture. :) I'll keep working on it.

It would be so cool to collect all the various examples of dithering in the gallery somewhere.

*BRONZE star for he/she who undertakes this project.
*SILVER star for he/she who undertakes this project and catalogs them with zooms.
*GOLD star for he/she who undertakes this project and catalogs them with zooms, plus gets artist approval for showcasing.
*TITANIUM star for he/she who undertakes this project and catalogs them with zooms, plus gets artist approval for showcasing AND creates custom brushes for downloading for several graphic software.

**PJ does not have titanium stars but if you do this one WILL be created.

Like the brush shape as it automatically creates the dither-effect. you know?
they work only in photoshop and paint shop etc.

Well I know paint already has ditherbrushes.

I'll have to research how to make them in Photoshop though.

Making brushes in Photoshop:

• Make the pattern you wish the brush to be using black on a transparent BG.
• Trim to smallest possible size
• Save as a brush
• Repeat as many times as needed
• Export brush set
• Share will all

Using other's brushes:
• Place set in 'brushes' folder
• dither away

The problem with brushes that I make is that it doesn't leave the pattern. It looks like normal brushes. You have to click seperately each time.

Is that right? I'm new to brushmaking :P

Yeah. Like I know Paint has a ditherbrush mode
But when I try a specific dither it doesn't get the pattern down right if you hold it down.

You have to click over and over

Don't use it! It's a bad brush.

But as soon as you save it, I'm pretty sure that you can't really edit it anymore. Or it's hard to. I haven't done much with that.

One more tip. Normally most people think that x8 is the highest zoom. But there's sort of a x10 glitch.

Click in the red box a few times and you'll find a secret x10 zoom.
Although that's not the zoom function, switch to zoom and click there and you'll find it.

If it was actually a bug and it was caused by a formula-based zoom-setting function (as I suspect), I would think one could hack the EXE and increase the height of that box (sounds easy enough, assuming it's just a constant someplace) to get arbitrarily-large zooms. I think that prospect merits further inspection.

EDIT: MSPaint has a tile-grid feature. I was not aware of this prior to now, most likely because it's not accessible via menus.

I deem this project highly neat.

lots of dithering techniques can not be drawn with brushes..
also the best is to draw them by hand, so you can make them as dirty or as non dirty as possible.
Im working on an image where I show alot of dithering techniques, but you have to take it as a guide, you cant put everything in one image..
for example take helm's spartan: http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/12082.htm#
you cannot exactly say what dithering techniques he had used, its all different.. you can say he uses alot of horizontal lines, but you can not descripe where the gaps will be..
so you can draw a brush with the stripes, but not with the gaps on the right place.
What im creating now is just a guide..

EDIT:
I think these are the most important ones, but feel free to add!

Monkey of Doom. It's there, I use it all the time, it's just like a sort of glitch.

And thanks Lollige. I've got the majority of those but thanks for some.

You mean the 10x zoom? I know it's there; I use it. I meant I was wondering if it was completely unintentional and a real bug/glitch, instead of an option they just decided not to include in the final version or something.

I'll be trying to add a way to access the grid options dialog, assuming the dialog actually does stuff once you get to it. EXEs are such a pain. D:

don't save dither patterns as brushes(brushes doesn't work for this). instead, save them as textures. in that way, the dithering pattern bitmap is always placed eficiently and never gets messed.

should I make a more detailed explanation?
