hi i was wondering ....

how do i use the color count thing on photoshop or infranview??/

coz i need the tool for a while now...
and i search pj forums for it but nothing really came up..

in photoshop,

under the file menu, choose save for web, a different screen will pop up and on the lower right corner there will be a color count.

The best color counter remains making a layer with colors and only picking from there. Very manual but error free.

ok this might sound very newibish but...
wheres the bucket tool on photoshop because i just got photoshop.. plus what pen tool am i suppose to use coz the other ones all seem to auto aa

hold your cursor over the gradient tool, and choose the paint bucket.

@Jal: you don't count colors that way do you?

You could totally use this if you wanted to. I made it a while back. Used it quite a bit myself--it's error-free.

I sure do

I pick a color and make a layer to add these shades as I work.
I then only use the color dropper from those shades.
In the process of coloring I sometimes move the color dots around and play with 'connecting shades'. Seeing just the palette helps me analize and focus on colors alone.
I use the save for web feature only to double-check that it matches my hand-made palette for count and output.

*This is an old habit from when I feared using Photoshop for PA. It does help me to be honest. I never use hue shifting or any other color tools. Its all eyeballed.
Playing with the colors on their own is so helpful in developing my colors.

Doesn't Photoshop support indexed images? I'm pretty sure when I used it in the distant past it did.

It does but then every time you add a new shade you need to convert to RGB and back, or mix each time. I think its a time waster : /

*this applies to me because I rarely start with the colors. They creep in as needed. Therein lies the beauty of PS, its adaptable to the user.

I generally keep track just by using the eyedropper so I can't pick up new colours, and occasionally checking Save for Web to make sure I didn't accidentally turn the opacity down or something like that instead of zooming out (happens quite often

Interesting

I was just curious how you organize these layers... I always end up with a mishmash because I forget to switch between layers, so for pixelling I usually just work with one at a time (whether it be collapsing it, or just pixelling on top of old ones), or sometimes 2 if there's a complicated background. Tips would be appreciated

Also, I only eyeball colours when pixelling as well, but using multiple layers still allows you to use colour tools, doesn't it? (I'm just wondering if I'm misinterpreting what you're saying)

I do it in graphicsgale but pixel in paint,so i never count them.

Yes, getting the wrong layer happens to me too once I get involved.
I re-collect them into one when I touch up colors or modify the palette in any way. Its manual, its probably not needed, its simply my habit and way.
I only change colors manually because when first pixelling with PS I got a lot of stray colors and semi transparent colors and all sorts of chaos. Its just a habit, but it works really well for me. The making the palette layer gives me a feeling of 'painting' too.

When in doubt use a hex editor with a file format with neither compression or bit packing.

That's how I did all my pixelling before I got a mouse.

And if you're going to use the Bucket, Magic Wand, etc. remember to turn off the aa (there will be a checkbox, just deselect it)
