Topic: Looking for spaceship sprite inspiration

One of the universities here offers computer game design and development and in previous years they've produced a space invaders clone for a project.

I was somewhat inspired to try some spaceship pixel art but unfortunately, I don't know where to turn for reference. I know there's the spaceship thread here but I'd like to see some examples used in real games as well.

I've always liked shoot-em-ups anyway so it'll be interesting to see any resources. :)

Ah yes, I should have specified that I meant 2D sprites.

I have been playing FreeSpace 2 this weekend! Realy an awesome game, I got a demo with my joystick ages ago.. now I downloaded full version.
Sadly its 3d

Well, you can get inspiration from 3D sprites aswell ;)

liked the fourth image, it was cool.

Those games are all european trash.

Actually, the arcade shmups of the 90's were really good too. I just like the Sega colors better because they are more contrasting.

I'm not going to tell you my favorite arcade shmups you will just have to poke around at the Xenocide Files on SHMUPS!. Same link as before.

Hmm Air Brawler is a classic that's cool. I used rotated raster sprites however.

Yes... well, actually the idea/joke was that you did not mention it was your game.

since a triangle couldn't considered of really good source of inspiration...

(Tyrian's Ship is bloody ugly)

you should think of making a starwars type ship. Kind-of like a tie intercepter, or some other imperial ships like shown below

EDIT- if you look around you can find star wars games wiht ships like those
