Hello! I'm working on a sprite and I could use some critiques.

This frame is just shy of finished; I want to give her an idle animation but I can't think of one other than maybe to make her tail move a bit. I also started on a running animation...

There's something off about it but I can't put my finger on it. I started blocking in colors, but something is still bugging me....

Here's some concept art of her, to show you where I'm coming from:

Thank you very much for looking!

I think I found what's wrong.

The first frame (where the foot on our left is in front)makes it look like she is jumping to the left. The rest of the animation the hips stay in the middle of the image.

Center the hip on that first frame and it should be ok.

I redid the whole thing; tried to make it a little more girly. I know it's just a stick figure at this point - without arms, even - but does this look better?

this is a million times better, i didnt like the bowed leg look run, also in the original i believe the elbows kick up too high/out to the side for a run.

Started blocking out colors on the run animation.
Head's a bit big at the moment, I know, but does all the movement look right?

Update: Started on some shading, made the arms longer; still not sure I like them....

Its looking better, but she doesnt look like she's going near as fast in the current one as the she did in the old one. I think it may be the arms: before they were kind of comically exaggerated now they just flop front to back like she's power-walking. Her arms should be bent at the elbow a fair amount and either move mostly forwards and back (as opposed to out as you had before), or if your going for a "girly" run you could keep the elbows down more like what you have and pull the lower arms outward so they move towards and away from her as she runs.

Edit: Ugh, cant find a good "girly" run image on google atm, and cant spend any more time looking for one <<. but heres something:

Normal run:

"girly" run:

(hopefully both of those sites allow hotlinking...)

That edit is so much better. I have to agree with Zera about the arms. From what I am seeing, she is suppose to be running at a pretty good pace.

Maybe have her upper body slightly twist side to side... also have her leaning slightly forward. Otherwise she looks like she is running somewhat like this (girlie run!) which isn't a bad thing but I don't think she could go to fast without leaning forward slightly.

Loving this character and this animation. Keep up the good work!

Also, I just had to share this

Ah-ha! Thank you very much! Yeah, I couldn't find anything good when I Googled "girly run" either... hahaha. XD

Better now?

H|S - that's actually pretty similar to what I was going for. XD Although yeah, the arms. D:

As to that second video... just... just... what.

that looks alot better! One thing... not sure if it's just my eyes. seems like she is "favoring" her left leg. something seems very slightly off.

idk what it is lol might just be me!

Does indeed look better :D

@ H|F - i think its a trick of the eyes, caused by the shading. Since the right (our right) leg has dark shading it doesnt seem to bump out as much as the brighter left leg.

Of course, maybe they really are off. I cant examine it frame by frame at the moment.

No, you're right, it's probably the shading. When I made the first stick animation, I mirrored the frames, so there shouldn't be any serious asymmetricalness or whatever, heh.

I'll work on the shadow, though. I think I'm ready to work on the details now. :D Thanks for all the help. I was really unsure about the animation, so I'm really appreciative of all the critique! Anything else that needs fixed before I clean it up?

well i took it and looked frame by frame, and one thing i noticed is that the tail suddenly pops from the left side to the right side and back again. if you can make it a bit less drastic it may be more fluid. but as it is now i dont think it's bad.

The loincloth thing hanging down also probably should flap around a good deal more, but heck if I know how fabric hanging like that would behave during a run :\

Yeah, thats why I asked! I wasn't too sure if it was just my eyes or the shading.

About the loincloth, it would go backwards, but that wouldn't look good.

Yeah, I think you're right about the tail. While I'm on that subject, I was informed that it may be... er... backwards? Just in case, I did one with the tail swinging in the opposite direction:

Which one looks better? Old or new? (Either way, like you said, it needs a bit of cleaning up to look more fluid.)

I think the second version looks the most natural.  Great progress so far!

Yay! I think I got it this time. Am I heading in the right direction?

Sorry for the bajillions of tiny updates. ^ ^; Hopefully the WiP will be helpful to somebody. (I know it's been hugely helpful to me, of course. :D)

Here's something else, so I don't keep showing off the same animation over and over, haha:

The first and last frames will have to be replaced with idle animations, and I'd like to have an "untransform" sort of animation rather than just a quick flip back to the beginning, and I'll have to add some more frames and clean up the movement quite a bit, but how is the concept? Any suggestions?

Great stuff so far. Gonna be following the progress on here.

The reverting back to normal animation will probably be pretty tricky, especially if you want her to be in the same position as she started. No real suggestions though, I got no clue how it could be done x]

with the transformation animation, i noticed when she comes down in wolf form her tail is very stiff, a little bit more fluidity in it would make it look awesome!
and idont mean it stands there on the held frame, when its in mid air the tail should kidnda fallow behind instead of be stiff and comes straight down.

Might have to take a break from animations when I'm done here, this has been pretty draining, heh. Maybe I should consider a four-frame walk animation... I don't know if I have the resolve to get through a process like this for every character in the game. ^ ^;

Edit! Fixed the movement some. No more rubber spine! 8D

I really like how this is coming along :D

and yeah, animation can be pretty draining, but darn if it isn't fun to see the little characters gettin' up and moving about.

I've been working on some menus and programming and stuff, but I'm back to this now. The south-facing one still isn't 100% done, but I'm taking a break on it... ^ ^;;

Also started on a portrait for her:

She won't actually be naked, armless, and boring, haha. I haven't started on the clothes yet and this is her "expressionless" expression. D:

Looks great! Have you heard about in-betweening? It's an animation technique used by frame by frame animators. In-betweening applies to most things that can be animated with the exception of 'unpredictable' things such as fire and water. Seeing as you know how the animation will start and end, you draw the first and last frames, and then you draw one in the middle, which is a pose half way between the first and last frame, and then you go between the start and the middle, and also the middle and the last, etc. You get what I mean? It makes animation so much easier.
