Hello there, I'm new, the name's Zack... and I write music but I'm taking a break from the norm and attempting to learn pixel art after years and years of infatuation with it.  Be gentle...

Edit - This sprite is my main focus for the time being...my guinnea pig for getting the lighting right... probably proportions too. :p

This were all done first before I read any tutorials or asked advice from a friend that suggested the tutorial+forum:

This one I just did about 5 minutes ago trying to adhere to what the tutorials I read had said, but I think I'm missing something somewhere...

I'm not sure what to work on next as far as what object to attempt to pixel, I know I was making a bad habit out of pillow shading and I'm trying to practice not doing it but it seems as though top down view graphics inhibit my ability to do so.  Any suggestions on what I should try working on first?

try to choose another light source, now it's pillowshaded, and it does not look so good. Here is some tutorials about basics :)

Yeah... I have a hard time using less color and keeping the light source consistent while I'm shading...  Working on this turtle sprite though to try and practice it on something with more of a predetermined shape to it.

gosh why do you use that purple background when doing pixel art?? it can't be helping you. Do you know how to transparify your backgrounds? If not, I or anyone else can teach you.

I LOVE your turtle guy though. If it gets cleaned up, it can be amazing

and perhaps you might want to change the green shading on the turtle's shell to something darker, or closer to brown. I don't see why he'd have green shading on his shell unless his skin is light emitting lol

Thanks, glad you like it. :)  I made his shell a little narrower and lowered the saturation on the greens, as well as removed the texture on the shell until I can get the shape of things pretty close to where I want it. :p  Also changed the hideous background from magenta to tan/brown.  I used the magenta because of how many sprite sheets I've seen use it over the years so it was an impulse to do the same thing I've seen... won't happen again. :D

I agree on the shell, I think I'm going to try making it brown to offset it from the rest of the turtle, similar to how the front of the shell is yellow.

oh, I'm very new to pixel art, I didn't know the magenta background had its use or anything? The shell on the turtle guy is much better sized now!

I just saw it a lot on stock sprite sheets and such along with some forms of green.  I think it was mainly art intended for Rpg Maker 2k, because it was designed to use magenta as transparency.

Anyway, played with colors some more, probably not much of a noticable difference but I did take the latest suggestion and made one leg darker than the other... definitely helped the depth.  Tried to smooth the legs out similar to the rest of the sprite as well. :p

wow that was quick! Just add texturing, small detail/last refining and he'll be done! I'm amazed on how quick you did this. It took me over 10 hours to get my avatar like I want it :-)
