Hi, it's a long time I've done something arty... unless you consider making aquariums is arty :D.
Anyway I started off this week with a hand drawn picture of a horse/pony...considering the build of the animal I'd say pony :)
Anyway, I scanned it, got the colorcount down, then resized to preferable size, 300x300 pixels... here it is...and now I'm out of inspiration...I'm sorry I started off with a hand drawn picture, because it was to hard to do a horse with pc only...:S

new update:

I don't know if it is a good idea to start blocking out the colors

I think horses have pretty weird anatomy in the first place. but the legs and head might be a little off. Im pretty impressed by how good this looks while its just done sketchy. Hope to see the end result and not miss out it looks promissing!

Yeah the proportions are way off. The front legs are almost T-Rex small. This image should be a good reference:

well, I wasn't really using a ref, but I studied my pony at horseriding school very good, so I must say he has a rather big head to be a pony, and I think the ref snader posted is a horse with a rather small head. I depends on the breed a lot how horses are builded. I think I can refer best to my pony as a mini-tinker horse... because he's actually a mix of different breeds.
Looks a little bit like this one:

Also I need to used a technique to shorten legs because of the angle of the horse:
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verkorting_%28schilderkunst%29
This is a Dutch article that shows how the arm of the girl in the painting is shorted for getting the right perspective.

I wanted the galloping to look very powerful so, the legs are rather high: like this pose:

I like the shape and I don't see much wrong with it...I'm just struggling with color, pixelpatterns to give it the right structure....

You not seeing anything wrong, doesn't mean there isn't anything wrong. Currently, the cranial area of the horse is nearly as big as its ribcage, and the head+neck is as large as the entire body.

And if you want to make a beefy horse, sure go ahead. But right now your limbs aren't beefy. They're the thickness of a slender horse, and they're very bony. If you want a beefy horse, look at photos of the Dutch Draft (sometimes spelled draught) and belgian draft

Thing is, for a beefy horse the proportions are a bit off, but because you've rendered the limbs as skinny and have quite visibly defined muscles - it looks like it's supposed to be a recreational horse rather than a worker. And for a recreational horse, the proportions are a lot more off.

well, by coincidence i found a picture that almost looks exactly like my pony. Big head, strong body, but not very thick legs. And the colors are almost exactly the same... he even has a blue eye. When I saw this one for sale I thought, this can't be true, they are selling my pony! But luckily the other photo's showed some differences and apparently the location of the sale is different. But I was amazed by how much this horse resembles mine :o

I'm sorry for the wining, but sometimes I get in a bad mood when it comes to artwork, I apologize. Despite I have some good idea's I'm a bit frustrated because I barely get a piece finished. My last finished work dates 2007. In mean time I had periods of trail and error and periods of hiatus...I hope you understand my bad mood and therefor are able to forgive me...
I guess I'm not patient and stubborn enough to work at a single piece till it is finished. I tend to have this with digital art even more, just because you can keep working and working on it. I also am a painter (acrylics) and I also make pencils as a base for painting or pixeling. Somehow I tend to be able to help myself better out when it comes to pencil and acrylics, work towards the thing I have in mind and finish a piece within the time I estimated. But I'm just a computer addict I guess...
Can someone please give me some advice on how to cope with such things...because I won't quit on art, somehow I keep loving it...:)
Anyway, I did a little edit in mean while so check this out:
