Made with this palette I entered into the palette comp.
I feel like there's something missing, something that will really make this pop as a piece, and I can't figure out what that thing is. Help please. |

first, needs some AA on the circle on the inside ridges
also , by the way you've highlighted the ridges i can't tell whether they are indented or raised. the MDOG could use a shadow since it looks like it's on top of the yellow thing. The highlighting ( on the top left for instance) may be what's causing the ridges to look awkward. don't think you need them. they don't make much of a difference if they're there or not. could you please describe what the picture is ? i' having difficulty telling what you want the brown edges to represent. is this a small coin? a podium? or a bevelled ring with yellow inside it? not sure what's going on. |

It's basically just a circle with a border; nothing special. I'll take off the highlights and add a shadow, then I'll see if it still needs something else.

It's a yellow circle with a red, rounded border that raises up above the circle. I added the shadow and fixed the border. I think it looks a lot better, but it still doesn't seem finished to me... Edited by mdog95 - 27 November 2011 at 4:41pm |

Arrite.
so you got your shadow. looks good. light source is coming from a sorta top/north kinda position where's the bevelling effect on the border that suggests this? if the border raises above the yellow, it needs a shadow too. ever used the 'blending effects ' in photoshop? draw a circle and then on another layer draw a flat colour underneath then play with the bevel/emboss blending options on the circle layer. (that is if you have photoshop. in which case you don't, grab a metal/jewelry ring, get a flash light and point it at the same angle and look at the shadows it creates) the AA is a little heavy on the inner circle, try to lessen it a little and emphasise the border more than the yellow so that the border colour is dominant. Other than that.. yeah. it's a circle with your name. good job Edited by Partack - 27 November 2011 at 5:28pm |

Okay, I added all of the shadows, and for the hell of it, I did an animation to emphasize the shine that I wanted to come across, and, obviously, it didn't come across before.

the shine effect is too slow. Perhaps it could cut the MDOG at an angle too to be more realistic.

the shine effect is too slow. other than that, it's a raised circle with your name. good job. Edit: upon looking at this for a little longer i think maybe the border could stand to be a little bit thinner, it seems to overpower the actual writing.. kinda draws the eye away from the main reason you're looking at the picture in the first place.. you know? The problem with that is, one pixel thinner is the original version...
Anywho, I'm going to take the thing and make a different shine when I have enough time. I threw this graphic together in Photoshop in about two minutes to demonstrate what I'll be going for and give myself a reference. It has a faster shine, and the whole thing gets the shine. Just seems better to me.
But I'll be putting that away for tonight. I'm pixeled out (pardon the cheesy phrase ;)). |

make sure that when you get to the new sheen, be sure to displace the line for each detail like the letters and stuff. jus' thought I''d point that out.
you're right, the diagonal sheen does look better but it's just a different kind of sheen. that one makes the whole thing look like a button/badge wheras before the text had emphasis and as metalic. i think if you just did the text it would highlight the text and not the (kinda plain ) circle.
