(Yay, my first post!)
Currently working on this just for fun. It's supposed to be a desert dwelling cross between a wolf and a fennec fox. So, it's longer and slimmer than a wolf with large ears, similar to a maned wolf. Looking for any critiques, things I missed, lighting/texture/shading/perspective issues. I'm mostly hesitant about the tail being too bushy, the hair inside the ear (direction? too much?), and the shading around the nose/mouth. Feel free to tear it apart. Below's the WIP animation and the current with the 17-color palette. (Not sure if that's too big? All the colors have been used so far and not planning on adding any more) ![]() Edited by FoxyFox12 - 20 August 2012 at 1:33am |

The right leg (front) seems odd in my opinion, it looks as if the wolf is lifting it's leg yet the foot looks solid on the ground. I would suggest to either lift the foot/paw or straighten the leg. and this is just me being a nit picky jerk (because I love fennec foxes) The only thing (in my eyes) that says fennec is the color, which is nice. I think maybe test either shortening the snout or making the ears largers/rounded. Fennec ears are really wide set and far back on the skull and almost bunny-ish By the way, I LOVE this and I can't wait to fav it in the gallery!

Thank you for all the compliments! They feel all warm and fuzzy inside. x3

Honestly, think it ended up coming out more like a maned wolf with a long tail than a wolf/fox cross breed. xD (Which would still need rounder ears, as H|F points out)

Originally posted by H|F You have a good point about the leg, it was supposed to look like it's lifted slightly, as if the wolf's about to take a step. I'll play around with the paw a bit.

For the fennec parts, I think it's kind of important to keep the wolfy snout. ("All the better to eat you with!") Though, looking at fennec fox references... Holy cow, I thought I made those ears big! That, I shall play with. |

Soooo......I kinda got distracted... ._. (mostly with work and gaming)
Went ahead and planned out the rest of the piece before finishing what I had so far...
This might take a while since I've only been working on it when I'm pants-crapping bored... xD ._. Anyway! The blue is definitely going to be taken down a notch when I get to it. Only expect it to add 3-4 colors to the original 17 palette. And the wolves' aren't exactly making eye contact, which bothers me a little and I'll probably play with later. Of course, still going to mess with that paw and ear. It just seems I balk at changing already made line art. (But have no problem making more, go figure. xD) Yea... Yay update! Comments welcome. |

Finally got around to actually working on this again today. Messed with the paw in question, though now the ankle area looks awkwardly bent, and shaded more.
Still balking on messing with the ear, but thinking I might just rework the ear on the other wolf later if that one works. Edited by FoxyFox12 - 04 October 2012 at 4:37pm |

I'd mess with the palette a little, see if you can consolidate some colors. Also in natural light, highlights are yellow-tinted and shadows are blue-tinted, but the amount you tint them is a matter of personal style. I've seen shadows as actual blue and light as actual yellow, and I've seen pieces that worked just as well where it was very subtle. Whatever works for you. Or not at all; that's what I love so much about art: there are no rules. Also: I love the exaggerated foreshortening but the left back leg looks kind of stubby.
Also: It might be a personal style but it looks like the tail is realy large, also if the fox / wolf is running towards us and about to turn to our left, the tail would be out behind him, maybe also slightly to the left. (I've never found out for sure but from watching my own dog, I think the tail turns towards the back leg that's being pulled back) As for the front legs, I googled some running / trotting dogs for the anatomy and found some stuff that might help: Good luck! Are you thinking of a background? Because I love the mountains and sky of the other one.
