I submitted this to the actual gallery without actually being done. My friends and I have a couple of projects gonig on. One being Zetabot, the other being a revamp of an old NES game. This is one of the first area enemies from the NES game. Obviously he has no bottom half, I can't quite get it to look right. The main thing is I don't know if I should make him pantsless, or with some form of ripped shorts/bottoms. If I still can't decide or make it look how i want by tomorrow night I will submit what I have and ask for help.  Oh, and I think it's at 18 colors including transparency.

Once again, bonus points for anyone who knows what game this is from.

The shading gives him a VERY pleasant look !

Yay, it's teh ultimate ferocious cuteness :D
Something about his sabre tooth looks odd although it seems logically correct
I'm no good at perspective things so I can't really help you, but all in all it looks ok to me

Unfortunately the only NES game I know of that involves tiger-like enemies is probably Mega Man 5

Show em you're a Tiger...
Show em what you can do...
The Taste of Tony's Frosted Flakes...
Brings out the Tiger in you...

AND YOU...

(chuckle)
Excellent work...
The colors are so vivid that they forced me into remembering those damn commercials...

First thing I thought of was the second enemies you meet outside the town of Leaf in Crystalis. (Along with the purple blobs.)

Very nice work, very dynamic pose and the shading is good.

I agree that the black outlines don't work here as shown. The tooth color is too soft and looks off, perhaps because there is no second tooth. His left paw looks too linear too. Is it Luigi?

JJ nails it! It is from Crystalis. Great game. I haven't really thrown him up against the game backdrop yet, as we are still working on a proper tile set, but that will probably be the biggest factor in whether or not we keep the black out line.

Jalonso - As for the tooth thing, I see where you're coming from with the tooth color, and I'll probably darken it up a bit. I don't really see adding the second large tooth as his head is a profile shot, even though his body is somewhat turned. I'll probably throw a little more work on the left fist, but I'm not sure what you meant by the Luigi comment.

Everyone else- Thanks!

appears to blend into his bottom jaw.

Crystalis... how come I've never played that game!
real time battles... big sprites.. nice graphics.. great sound track
This one definitely surpasses the horizon of a normal NES game.
I'm amazed!
Unfortunately there's no PAL version and I'm currently broke D:

It really was ahead of it's time. But anywho, to brush up on the game, my friend found an emulator and the file somewhere. I don't know where he actually got the Crystalis game from, but the emulator can be found here www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/nes/fceultra.html

I was on lunch and did a quicky on him. I Decided to change the teeth, and I also threw out the black outline, just for comparison purposes.

The left one is the revision of the right.

Yay, good old fceu will do :D
The rom is pretty easy to find, too

So.. what exactly are you planning with the concept of Crystalis that would require such a large pixel of one of its enemies?
Is there any way we can check the process of your project?..
(sorry, guess I immediately fell in love with that game >.<)

EDIT: Yes, that definitely looks better to me

Well, a couple of my buddies built their own engine and what not, and they never really got around to doing their remake because neither of them could draw. That's where I come in. We're staying very true to the story (4 swords, the tower in the sky, etc) but also adding a few things. We all agreed that this deserved a remake, and the rerelease of it on Gameboy was definitely not it.

It's mostly a graphic overhaul, with a few story/side additions in mind. We haven't yet decided on the size of the resolution, but it will be at least 800x600, possibly 1024x768. He may be a little bit big for the 800x600, but the way I figure it is that a weretiger would be a fearsome, large creature (even though it is the 2nd enemy) and you will be moving around the screen and actively fighting it so it won't always be completely on the screen, or overpowering too much. If it is decided that he is simply to big, I'll have to shrink him.

As for watching our progress, at least art wise, I will be posting things like this fairly regularly to make sure that it's as good as I can make it. My main goal right now is to finish all of the area 1 enemies, finalize the hero, and do some townspeople so that we can throw them in the engine and see how it looks.

Gameplay wise, I don't know if they will want to release anything unfinished, but I'll se if I can't talk him into releasing the first area when we finish it, just to get outside feedback.

Crystalis is my all-time favorite game of all-time! It's the only game I've played through numerous times, own the original copy of, and kept track of a re-make group that fizzled out. (I believe it was called Crystalis 2000 or something like that.

I have a mockup of a screen I remade with better graphics. I also created all the Crystalis maps for www.vgmaps.com. (Which I'm still working on.)

Bottom line, my all-time favorite game... ever.

The original sprites in the game were 16x16 up to 32x32. Don't you think your sprite size is rather large? I mean, even 128x128 is big.

It will certainly be a lot of work so I'm curious how this project will develop.
Crystalis deserves a decent remake. That's for sure! =)

(ugh.. I just noticed the game can be quite challenging as well ;-;..)

Alright, I'm a stupid NES enthusiast.. I shall remain quiet now

I like the updated one much better also. I think the teeth work a little more with them this way.

As for the sprite size, he may end up being a little large, but I really like the design of him. Once I've gotten a rough idea of how I would like things to look, I will see how it looks in game, and then decide if he needs resizing.

Again, the main reason he is this big is I just felt a weretiger would be more imposing, but I'll just have to wait and see the next time I can get with my partners in crime.

i think the lineart and what you have here is good, but not finished. i
think there needs to be more contrast and texture on the fur. the
claws need to be shinier and the selout of the teeth must be much
darker.

Hey there!

I think the same as Shark on this one. I feel there should be more contrast and more textures. Nice work tho, it's coming along real nice!

I can't thank you guys enough for all the suggestions and constructive crits. I'll darken the selout and shine those claws up. I'll see if I can't get him a little "furrier" as well.

To help on the fur, you could add some textures near the junctions opf the body (elbows for example) or on the dark parts of the figure. The texture will help to add more depth to the shadow at the same time.

Show us when you have something!

Ok. I got home from work a little while ago and was messing with the slimes, but I did a few tings to the Weretiger as well.

As was suggested, I upped the contrast on some of it and shined the claws (maybe a little too much) and tried to make him a little furrier with the lines. Also, darkend the selout on the teeth. If it needs to go darker just say the word. I'll have to figure out some way to do the texture thing because I just can't quite get it. I'm still a major noob at pixel art.

Again, for comparison purposes, but now the right is the revision of the left.

some more depth.

The teeth are perfect now. The hair puffs on his back are pointing in the same direction and have the same pointyness as the ears. This makes his ears dissappear. I do like the hair back there but they should be smaller. I do not like the color or shininess of the new claws. Perhaps mixing some of the teeth yellow with the belly grey and maybe the pale green from the eyes, so that the claws have the look of having been used lately but still shiny and sharp. I also think the eyes need to have depth added at the corners, this may not be possible since there is no room. One last thing is the nose, it does not work with these pinks..... oooooh, and the bump directly above the pink nose where you have 4px up and 7px across should definitely be 3 up then 1 then 6 across. I love this piece, do it justice

A quick/rough update I did on lunch. Shortened some hairs, fixed the wrinkle above the nose, a couple of small things.

Left is the revision of right.

Thanks for the continuing help. I'll try just a slight more contrast and maybe try my hand at some AA. As for the wrist, I know what you mean, and I'll try a little thicker. Who knows, I may like it.

perhaps add two more orange shades, the contrast needs to be
upped by 100% to get it more 3d.

i think it'd help quite a bit for the furryness if you dont use flat circles and stuff for the shading, but try to use scanline dithering or something alike.

right now, the smoothness is making it unfurry.
