![]() Topic: [UNPAID] MAGICAL MASTERS (Work-In-Progress)Posted: 28 October 2014 at 8:01pm |

I started Magical Masters about 1 month ago. A retro style platform / adventure game that takes place in a small medieval-fantasy world where can be found a kingdom holding a beautiful princess in the great green lands, the death itself among the lost deserted ruins, the frozen ice lands where even time freezes, a pirate ship ruling the electricity found in the power plants and the forsaken volcano which holds a long-lost dragon.
It may sound too ambitious but actually, it's a small/medium project depending on your point of view. The game have a max of 10 stages separated in 5 worlds being 2 stages per world with a boss at the end of each one. About the pixel art: I actually have a story working on games and pixel arting, so I have already started doing the basic works, if you are asking how the graphic style of the game would look like or have any doubts on this topic, check the screenshots down below, the graphical style is pretty much old final fantasy based; imagine how old final fantasy characters would look like in a platformer, it is just like that. If you happen to feel like this is too much for you, I am not really in need for someone to do all the graphical work while I do the programming stuff, I just need help on doing basic pixel arting effects like: upgrade effects, item-use effects and, above all, someone that I can contact when I get stuck (in need for a well done pixel arting). Screenshots: Don't forget: if you have any doubts just contact me or ask in here, anyways, I will respond as soon as I can. If you are interested in the game, want to help or work on it with me, don't think twice before contacting me and/or leaving a reply to this topic! Want to follow the game, get any news and even a download link for the demo as soon as it comes? Mail me with your name and with the subject "Magical Masters - Pixel Joint interested": sjuniornairaz@gmail.com. I am thankfull for all the help I can get. Please try not to bump shamelessly.

It's no surprise you get no answers...
You don't offer compensation (that i can uderstand), no promise of an interesting work, classic gameplay, and who could ever want "exposure" from doing some bits in an ugly game ? Honestly, that assests are ugly. Most people here are far better than you at "arting". Asking them to assist you on menial tasks within this style feels bordeline insulting :). Put your pride aside, and offer freedom on the main part to the guy... Or do it all by yourself. and find somehting interesting to do/say with the gameplay. |

Alright, I didn't really think that through, sorry...
Next time I'll be more careful about my graphical "art" and try not to unconsciously insult people by not lending them the freedom to do the art that they want... |

It's fine to ask artists to work within an existing style, since it reduces the amount of reworking old assets that the artist would have to do to get the game looking consistent. However, because it does impose an extra limitation on the artist, you have to be really sure that you really want the art style to be what it is now. In your case, I find it difficult to believe that you wouldn't be open to trying other looks for your game (unless you already have 90% of the art made).
Since you're not paying, I think you should expect that you'll likely end up working with multiple artists who each contribute a little bit instead of staying to the end, and who probably won't give you a consistent style even if you asked them to. If you haven't already, you should make a full list of art that needs to be made, grouped in sections that must be consistent (for example, you probably want all the item-use effects to feel consistent and all the UI to feel consistent, but you could get away with the item-use effects not being in quite the same style as the UI). This would let you assign well-defined work to an artist in small, manageable batches. It'd also do wonders for measuring progress, and most people like knowing how well they're doing and how close they are to finishing. |
