Off the top of my head, this appears to be the general shading:
Additionally, your composition seems to be coming along nicely but has a few issues -- 1) You've pitched the man's right eye too low. You'll notice in the original that his eyes lie along a perfect horizontal plane. 2) His nose is significantly larger in your piece and pitched downwards instead of upwards. Be careful, noses are one of the classic beginner artist gotchas. People often learn to draw eyes by learning a master "eye shape". The problem is there is no such thing as a master "nose shape": different lighting, angles and faces will produce wildly different nose shapes. Focus on the shading of the nose rather than the idea of it and you'll get a sense of how lighting/shape/angle come together to describe each nose. 3) Your color scheme is good and your details are solid but when you're trying to create shadows, use the complementary color to really punch up deep shadows. Your face is sitting somwhere between green, yellow and orange in tones, so your complementary shadow colors are red, blue, and purple. Using purple lightly in some of the deepest shadows will make them look really deep. 4) I really, really like your feather headdress. It has a really interesting perspective. Be careful of the black outlining because it can muddle things. Notice how the feathers in the original are translucent and the light seems to light the edges of each feather up a bit. If you can use a lighter set of tones to edge the feathers, I think you'll find they will really pop. Good luck, great work, and I hope all of this helps! |

The near cheek is too pronounced. It doesn't really need that highlight, the highlight is making the cheep look very sharp rather than soft and curved like in the photo.
The nostrils tend to be dark, so having them be a midtone looks wrong, makes them look more like little dimples than deep holes going into the head. Right now they look about as dark (and therefore as deep) as upper lip. |
