![]() Topic: 14 Color Palette CompPosted: 10 February 2021 at 2:05am |
|
Pixeljoint is holding another palette competition which is open to everyone and is quite simple. Competition closes in 2 weeks, February 28, 2021. (CLOSED) - The winning palette will be used on PJs next ISOcollab project. If you submit a palette you acknowledge that it will be used by others for the purpose of this project and credit may not be posted by participants if they submit their project piece to their gallery but you will get overall credit for it. These palettes are not to be considered art so please do not submit to your galleries. Its best to assume that others may use your palette beyond this project. By entering you are giving permission to others to use.
- Judges are your PJ Mods and select invited PJ members. - Posting works using your palette on this thread is a very good way to show how your palette is supposed to work. You can post your original or existing works or other people's work, even pieces from old ISO collabs recolored by your palette. - A unique + original palette is the goal but a well balanced palette is very important even if your entry is monochromatic.
You must name the HEX values and NO black - 000000 or white - FFFFFF |

I am doing some pieces with this colors and more, hope to nail the colors! just try them! its mostly a lot of greens for the nature and the trees abundant in those times, and red for blood! (or dragons hahah)
It?s called Jeriko. I will do a analysis of possible permutations of the colors and an example soon!

Here's mine! I call it Knight14. As always I don't consider myself a goddess with colors, but I gave it my darnedest best. And I got a super rough and scratchy image as a quick test. Lol

Hey everyone!
I'm so glad to finally enter one of these contests since color palettes has been an obsession of mine for so long! So, after a ton of tweaking and different iterations here's my entry, which i called Shire-14. ![]() For this one i tried to make it as versatile as possible, while keeping the theme in mind and trying to offer the necessary grays and browns that i think are essential for the medieval setting. So first choices were a midtone brown (wood, wildlife, dirt, etc) and a multi-purpose dark brownish gray (to shade everything brown, but also armor, rocks, castle walls - aka, everything gray) and a lighter gray (as the go to color for rocks, armor, etc). And also a really dark blue (for your darkest desires Onto the water and grass with two shades of green and two more of blue, and those were the base colors for the theme. Then came a long process of iteration and trial an error to find the colors for the remaining spots. In the end, i settled with: - two midtone oranges: a red-ish one for blood and fire and whatnot; and a very versatile midtone yellowish orange that serves as a complement to a few of the others. For instance, it can be the lighter tone for wood texturing, the midtone for the fire, and the mid/dark tone for sand or gold. - a bright yellow (fire, sand and highlights); - a light yellowish beige (skin tones, clothing...) - a very bright (almost white) beige (for highlighting, snow, and pretty much everything white). While tweaking, i tried to make sure all colors worked well with one of the ISOCollabs that i think had the most similar elements to the medieval theme: the PrehISOria collab. So, here's the Shire-14 applied to it: ![]() This collab serves as a great example of how well the palette can portray most needed textures (rocks, grass, wood, wildlife, blood and fire and even sand and snow). Later on, as a stress test, i decided to apply it to some of vierbit's works: ![]() Although a lot of details got "lost in translation" (since vierbit used WAY more than 14 colors on each of these) i think the palette held itself really well considering the color count. Also tested it on one of fool's castles (because medieval) and came to the same conclusion: ![]() Again, a lot of details had to be sacrificed, but it still looks great for a 14 color drawing. So that's it! Hope you like it and sorry for the huge images! ~edited: changed description because *bad english*. |

*Warning: Long Post
Here is my palette, I call it MDVL14
here is the DB Analyzer
here is a few (but not all) meaningful colour combinations
I chose these colours because I wanted to be able to cover most essential textures for a medieval world such as stone, wood, grass, water, sand, dirt and also be able to cover various materials like iron/steel, bronze, gold, mythril. I also felt it was important to be able to cover things such as potions, magic, alternative lighting, fire, scales. All things considered - the palette is skewed towards brown and grays especially in the warmer colours, although it is contrasted by blues and greens. All colours play combined roles in many of the textures. here is an armour test on a few of Cyangmou's sprites this test shows some ways to accomplish iron/steel, bronze, gold, and mythril style
here is the palette applied to a couple of previous ISOcollabs, to test how well it can adapt to the textures

Figured I'd give this a go.
I'm gonna call it 'Trebuchet'
I thought a dark palette would suit the medieval theme, but I also wanted it to be colorful and high contrast. Heres a little mockup I made to show different materials and lighting
And here is a Dawnbringer analysis of the palette:

I made a palette and tested it out a little too. Quite happy with it! It's called 'Dungeon14'.
I tried to make it as versatile as possible. It's inspired by old manuscripts and art of the likes of Hieronymus Bosch. Dungeon14
My test
Tested on PrehISOria

I don't know if all the colors are correct, I took the colors as they appeared in the screenshot, not as the codes were.

Was a winner ever decided for this or was the new collab started? It's been about 2 weeks now since the Feb 28th deadline and I've been checking daily but I'm starting worry that I've somehow missed something.

@Esven; don't worry! I think we are waiting for just one more judge to cast his vote. The winner should probably be announced in the next day or two (at least as far as I can deduce from Gecimen's scanty notices
