Hi guys, I'm new to this community and thought I'd submit my first proper avatar, all made using MS Paint (even the basic sketch). I made a progress bar also, to help with the judging. For the record, I did try a little dithering, antialiasing (all by hand of course), and selective outlining. Anyways, here it is:

Btw, I cared a lot more about the face than the background, so the bg didn't really turn out great. So, what do you think?

NEW ONE (Happier, lighter, smaller, and a more mellow background):

Better? Worse? Feedback is appreciated.

Okay, okay, sorry...it's my first time here. How about some sensible, productive posts?

oh yeah, thats the way to get people to want to help you out.

anyways, i would like to see a better background...  it will make it pop a bit more, backgrounds a very important in deciding whether a piece is ok or great

I was considering putting a white border, like I did around the edge of the box, around the face. Would that work?

i mean the entire background.  the simple diagnal gradient is well over done...  try some sort of pattern, scene, or something.

I was mainly just practising on the face, but thanks, I'll bear that in mind.

I'd say the face had a nice cartoony style.  As far as I can tell the shading looks pretty good.  Try some more anti-aliasing around the face as well.

AS far as the backgroud goes, either make it more subtle to allow the face to stand out, or go for somethign a bit more complicated instead of the pseudo gradient bg.

And all the things people haev said so far have been good, so don't worry.

Keep Pixeling.

Cool, I will. I'm only 13 though, so I doubt I'll ever be able to match up to the real big fish here. Not in the near future, anyway.

Age has little to do with it.  There are great pixelartists at every age.

As for the art, I noticed about three black pixels leftover from the outline of his hair on (our) left side.  I agree that that type of background is overdone, but were you to keep it, I'd suggest not having the random two pixel lines strewn in the otherwise perfect 45 degree angle, I don't quite see the reasoning there.

They must be very talented to be able to create those advanced shapes, though. Starting another avatar now...but this time I'm gonna make it so it's actually small enough to fit here.

I'm 14, and I'd say you are better than me in certain areas such as color selection and use...

But to your new avatar.

Better bg, but too little contrast maybe, I can hardly tell between the two blues.  I think that face is good, but I think the darker/red ish selout is a bit to intense, maybe take it a bit more to the orange side...

Also, I'de get rid of teh white outline around the head and anti alias it, it'll look nicer.  You could even just make the white outline bigger and anti alias everythign into the white, which is much easier.

There wasn't really meant to be too much contrast on the background..it's meant to be more of a subtle thing. Anyways, I'm taking your comments on board, but for now I'm just going to start another avatar.
