I am finally getting back into pixel art for a new game I am building for the iphone. Below is what I have so far for the basic walk and idle animations. Some critique on the animation would be appreciated. I am pretty happy with the idle animation. Not to sure about the walk. Although it might be just the lack of shading that makes it look odd to me.

His body needs to move up and down while walking, it really looks a bit foolish now.

Also, he seems to be leaning much to the front when he is standing.

I updated the walk with some up and down movement and some arm movement. I will fix the leaning on the idle anime next. I agree with you on that one Lollige. Thanks for the input

The walk animation is way better now! Great!
 
On the waving thing I see no difference. I noticed the leaning mostly on the ipod screenshot btw.

I donno, I just wouldnt wave like that. Seems a bit unnatural, the way the arm moves.

I am pretty happy with the wave so I think i'll leave that alone. As for the speed, 0.1 is the speed set for all animations in the game sprites. Since the game will support many different sprites to choose from I wanted to keep it consistent. Also the idle animation doesn't play over and over so it looks better in the game when it just plays through once. I am working on the fall animation now so I will post that soon.

I took another stab at the walk animation. I think the legs look alot less blocky now. Also added the fall animation which I think needs alot of work.

Still wasn't happy with the walk animation so I redid the whole thing. I also updated the idle animation with the new body shape. Any comments?

I see what you mean. His legs are supposed to be bending as he falls. I'll see if I can make that more obvious. Thanks.

I had tried something similar to that. Yours looks better. But there is still something about that left leg that doesn't look right to me.


Here is my first try at coloring the first frame of the idle animation. Go easy I am colorblind.

about the legs in the falling animation, i think its all about the way you shade it. since its going to be quite "hard" to make both legs to be readdable only with its shape or base(due size and desing limitations mainly)
~
dont be afraid to give your character's haircut some volume. since its cartonish, it would be a good idea to add some life and freshness to it.

also, i'd like ot ask if its posible to add some facial expresions in this particular animation so it wouldnt look so stiff...

@Metaru: I see your point and I will try again on the falling animation once I get to coloring it. I hadn't liked that face before but seeing how the ear was in your edit made me realize why. I also took your advice on the hair and will work on the expression next.

Am I the only one that thinks the walk is iso and would look weird in a 2D platformer game? If so is because of the left leg since you can see more than you should.

Not sure what you mean by retro. It's supposed to be kinda snappy. Like he just flicks his hand out and waves real quick.

Also, I'm interested as to how you're making this game. What software are you using to program it?

Old games have what would now be considered choppy animation due to low framerates and few frames. I thought that you might be mimicking the style of retro games.

You're animating at a higher framerate, but the animation is still choppy because the distance between the down position and the up position in the wave is too far apart. Try making the down position closer to the up position.

The object of the game is to get all your character to the opposite end of the board before your opponent. You shift columns that contain your charaters either up or down one space per turn.

Yes you shift the crates to open a path for your characters to move. The maps are randomly generated.

And while I was scrolling trough his applications, in search of something, I found that logo of yours! How coincidentally!
I have tried it too, however both players got locked up in the middle.
Anyway, funny to see that probably all over the world players like my friend are playing that game of yours now!

Yeah the lock up in the middle is a stalemate. There is an update in review that ends the game when that happens. I also added 3 levels of difficulty which makes them happen less often. If you want to be a better programmer it just takes practice :)

I know whats wrong with the waving :D when he puts his arm up he stops moving his arm and starts tilting his hand from side to side a weird wave try it in real life lol. When he waves his whole arm should move
