Alright.. starting a new larger project in a cyberpunk world.

Working field so far:                   Started coloring, lost window..

C&C as usual highly welcome.. There might be some persepctive flaws in there but I want it to erase them before entering the real coloring and detailing.

Now looks quite surrealistic rather than cyberpunkish...

Hmm... Still it's very hard to understand what's happening here. Looks like a bar scene, a bird's head and and a side view of ancient ship at the same time. Is it a scene inside of a building?

I think the dithering looks odd...
So..
I did a quick edit to show you "TWO" directions that you could take this pic.
Keep in mind that their is a unlimited number of different ways you could shade this.

I changed the shading from dithering to a wood texture,
And i made a low contrast and high contrast version.

Hope that helps give you some ideas.

Wood would completely go against the "Cyberpunk" title though, but it is interesting looking.

I really think you need to show more of this ship, Club, cuz right now it's really hard to read. Even if you dont use the full ship in your image I think it would be a great help to both you and us to be able to see the ship in its entirety.

dirigebles are more common to the 'steampunk' genre then the cyberpunk genre, but i would tottaly be cool with a mix of the two. punk-punk genres rule anyway.

meanwhile, back on-topic: take god_is_evil's advice, the perspective is way cooler and the resulting composition is much more interesting to look at. Also, i'm not shure you should ditch the window, it opens a lot of oppertunities to add mystery and intrigue to your pic

and i tottaly disagree with zerantanus, showing the ship in it's entirety would be boring as heck and outright cliché no matter what. just add something else that shows it's a big ship in the sky, like a gentleman on bicycle-helicopter hybride (not that that wouldn't be terribly cliché).

good luck

Thanks for the crits and tips. I surely take these in option. I really like the wood texture of God is Evil.

To clear a bit of vagueness up, I wanted to make a scene where a (in this case indeed steampunk) airship has to take a sharp right turn (so the lower part of the ship is a part of the bottom, I need to figure out how to do that). There will be added things later on, I just need to get the main object right. There will be a window there and loads of other detaily things. There will also be extra things in the sky. So don't worry I just want to take the things step by step and one at the time so not to drown in this project.

Made some changes, but it seems like the ship is knacked.. Perspective wise

I didn't say to use the whole thing, I said to at least sketch out what the whole thing so everyone (club included) can have a much better understanding of the anatomy of the vessel, then crop it to whatever he wants to show.

As for the new version - looks good, but it's an angle that fits a full shot much more than a cropped one, though cropping it is still possible.

For the newer version I intend to keep it in it's full glory like this. With smaller vessels/objects around it.

i like the newer version but i would suggest a lower or higher angle. that would probably make things more interesting

The newer version is much better! Next time, define everything before dithering!

About the new one: the front is slightly off the center of the ship, I think you should move it a bit more to the left.
Good luck!

@Dhr. Bosch: I'm planning to put a close-up of a huge ship behind it so there will be more "action" in the scene.

@Jalonso: Thanks. Wait.. wha?

@Lollige: I will, thanks.

Edit:

What is that ball going to be? It looks nice right now, but I assume it is going to be hard to make it nice when you want everything detailed...

Seems like the front of the ship is in a different perspective than the back. May want to work that out before you get too far in.

@Lollige: The blue ball is a placeholder for some kind of dome. It probably will be partial glass while the rest of it will be copper or wood or both.

@Hatch: Can you make an edit with some red lines? Since I don't see it.. (could be the fact that all I can think of right now is this ship (and the birth of my daughter).. So I can't see those things anymore)

This is getting annoying.. It made my head hurt that I didn't creat enough space to add the Steampunky items, like tubes, gauges, steam, etc.

Starting again in this awesome thing called Isometric (since this perspective thing starts to hurt my mind. I feel guilty for slurping up all your attention and such..

I know, it also had more feeling to it.. but it also had the power to explode my brains..

Improvement:

I need help shading the propellor (and the glass dome thing. Actually I want it to be roundish but I can't figure out how to get that effect. Jal! I need your Iso knowledge here!

I like the body and all, but yeah, that triangle windshield-thing definitely needs to be round to match all the curves around it.

And this also reminds me that I still need to try my hand at ISO :< Wish I could offer some advice for it but I'd rather someone who actually knows something do it :P

I always have trouble with rounded surfaces in ISO.  The shading will follow your light source, the propeller should be light on both blades as they both face the direction your light seems to come from, maybe the left-most one being slightly less bright.  Check google images for things like soap bubbles for ideas on your cockpit shading.

What if the blades of the propellor are like / and \ ? (sideview)
That way it means that only one catches the light while the other stays ni the shade. I do think there's room to improve the details on the shadnig there (as with the rest of the ship) But how...

Thanks for the tip on the bubble thing. I already googled images for lighting on sphere and such.. but since the dome isn't a perfect cirle, it's hard to find a good alternative.

Came up with something, not happy tho:

And.. OH YES!!:

When doing an isometric piece it's easy to let the structured lines and proportions cramp your rendering style. I think that the colours could benefit from hue shifting, being toned down and unified.

The two main properties of glass are translucence and reflectivity, right? So, why not just do that?

I just scribbled a glass edit, it may give you some ideas. The great thing is that any reflections don't need to be isometric, or even straight- lined (In fact, that'd often be plain wrong!). Play with distortion, put colours everywhere on a whim (refining later ;P) and you'll find a much less stodgy image as a result.

So yeah. I'm half asleep, please excuse me :D

EDIT: that's much better. but the glass comment still applies :D

@Jeremy: I'm stunned.. I will definetly take this "edit" into consideration. Thanks a lot!

I don't want it to be transparent, but I do want it to be reflective.. So how's this?
