Topic: What is pixel art - Case law (ADULT THEMEPosted: 03 January 2010 at 8:24pm |
|
################################
Why adult themes? ################################ Because it will refer to pieces that have nudity and adult themes. If you are a kid don't read the thread. ################################ What is this thread? ################################ The idea is that you post pieces that are not pixel art **AS JUDGED BY MODS THROUGH STATUS AS REVISION NEEDED OR NOT*** (either your own or others as long as you still have links to the original). Also post a counter example if appropriate. That way we have an objective set of rules. So if you see a piece that say is too jaggy, you can link to the section of this thread that posts examples of what is too jaggy and what isn't. If we have an objective set of rules there could be less drama. There are two types of rules, case law and legislative law. Legislative law would be "every pixel is placed by hand" whereas case law is using examples in the past to form rules. The case law is the only thing that will work imo. I've got an example here. Please post your own examples, like: *jagginess, spray tool, gradients, color reducing photos, depicting sex* Btw this isn't official or anything but it can still be useful. ################################# In regards to using Photoshop or Painter or scanning images ################################# NOT OK: This isn't pixel art. It hasn't been cleaned enough: http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/36561.htm ![]() OK: This is pixel art because it has been cleaned: http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/48603.htm Cleaning: ![]() More ok examples: http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/7649.htm http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/20235.htm ###################################### In regards to using blur tool ###################################### You can get away with it if it is only used for the background and probably cleaned a bit. OK: http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/15585.htm ###################################### In regards to nudity ###################################### Note - rules will be different if sex is involved in the piece. Also put a warning NUDITY in the title and preview OK: http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/15585.htm (penis but floppy) http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/48991.htm (full nudity) http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/11999.htm (penis but with arms) NOT OK: http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/39794.htm (I'm not sure what was wrong with that piece.) http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/39786.htm (see here for the original. http://probertson.livejournal.com/27579.html not sure about why it was rejected but "giant rock-hard penis goes against PJ policy.") Blegh. Art is personal, everyone has his/her own opinion to what's pixel art. Stop debating about what should be allowed to be made. Instead make. |

Snader - categorizing things can be fun too!
Antiferea - if u r trying to stir up trouble please try harder. In case I haven't been clear what I'd like people to contribute is any examples where something got rejected and we still have access to the original or it is obvious from the preview. Also double check what is said, if you know of a piece that say that uses a gradient and is accepted just post and I will put as an OK. Also if u disagree with the interpretation of why it was rejected u can post that too no problem. The goal isn't to change the rules at all just to ultimately produce a post that can be used as a reference when there are contentious pieces. Also you can get an idea what is acceptable before you make something. ##################################### On color reducing other people's paintings (or photos) ##################################### NOT OK - http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/20261.htm (thread) http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n118/TheBoBslow/ripproof.gif (shows reduction) http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/46295.htm (thread) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v198/tumble_weed/HALF-BAR.gif (shows reduction) ##################################### On using gradients ############################### NOT OK - http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/45642.htm http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/13149.htm (gradient was removed and it was accepted again) ############################### ##################################### On depicting sex ############################### Note - include a warning in the preview and title such as "ADULT THEMES" OK - http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/36042.htm (its not happening and is a bit ambiguous about what is going to happen) NOT OK - http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/32926.htm (because the viewer is made to participate? "A hot dog/sausage made to look like a penis fit inside a bun that is pointed at the viewer suggestively tells them to 'eat it' which, in our opinion, creates the suggestive of vulgarity.") http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/47614.htm (not sure why it was rejected but it did show a man's back and bum. I will pm vital for an explanation and the original) http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/47661.htm (originally this picture with breasts was not allowed. But with a bra it is allowed) http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/39786.htm (see here for the original. http://probertson.livejournal.com/27579.html not sure about why it was rejected but "giant rock-hard penis goes against PJ policy.") ############################### On using large palletes ############################### Note - using fewer colors may lead to a better piece! OK - http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/29962.htm http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/40039.htm ############################### ############################### On simplicity ############################### OK - if simplicity is a key feature and it couldn't be improved http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/28889.htm ############################### ################################# On Jagginess ################################# NOT OK - http:// www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/46326.htm The lines on that piece could have been cleaned up more by AA so that may have contributed to it being rejected. The original can be seen in the first frame of this animation: http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af45/oooonek/kuririn-1.gif ################################# On collaboration ################################# OK - http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/47057.htm (if you only show the part you created) http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/18268.htm (if one person colors another person's line art only) NOT OK - http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/31564.htm ################################# ################################# On Transparency ################################# For small sprites a plain color background should be replaced with a transparent background. OK: NOT OK: "To make it simple, yes, most(at least in my case) were sent back due to useless bg" - The BOB http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/49346.htm (example of useless BG) Instructions: Use the following sites to transparify: iaza.com http://www.gifworks.com/index.php (this may be better for making animated gifs transparent because iaza gave an animated gif with an unwanted result where the previous frames shone through) ################################# ################################# On canvas size ################################# Note - may be good to use smaller canvases because in olden days they had smaller canvases and it makes control/neatness easier. "but in pixel-art size and color-count do matter. the same amount of detail could be in half or even a third of both the canvas size and number of colors." - tomic OK: NOT OK: ################################# Edited by sharprm - 11 January 2010 at 1:57am |
