That is almost as profound as Metaru's ponderings about art.

This website is so slow for some reason. I've taken to playing solitaire between link clicks.

Maybe someone could write a firefox extension that facilitates this?

EDIT: Typo.

The time has come for strict pixelart technique enforcement...yup the time is here.

If it wouldn't ruin many a 'piece of art' I'd demand that the color palette must be attached to every submission.

And there is a gradient submission that's in my crossfire since page 100+- of this thread.

Wow her work is damn impressive. The images are very well done. Tough call. I would let it go but that is just me. There is no special formula for defining the minimal amount of colors necessary. Perhaps low color images are just not appealing to her but there should be some defining rule of thumb for color counts and submission. Something to do with canvas size in proportion to colors used. I'm more concerned that she created the results in a traditional way. Even the holy grail of Pixel Art "Metal Slug" uses many colors. Many of the images in the gallery could not exist as they are in say 256 color mode even if they only use 4 or so colors. Each mode has a unique set of colors that can be used. Even if your sprite has 4 colors it may not be able to exist in lower color resolutions because there is not support for a color or two in the image. To see what I mean try saving a low color sprite down into a 256 color palette in ms paint. Tradition limited the specific colors you could use and how many you could use per scene. Everyone here with the exception of a few have broken with tradition on specific color palettes. Without a specific color resolution there is no solid barrier to limit color count.

Just my thoughts, and NO I'm not intentionally playing devil's advocate. It has always bothered me that people only follow half the concept of lower color images. If you want to do it right you need to have a set palette from the hardware. I still think that people should try lower color work once in a while to stay sharp.

For example your balloon image when saved in 256 color mode has 4/5 of the original colors and looks pretty close.

Original:

256 colors and only 4/5 colors of the original

The original is not really better but you could have used a lower color resolution to get a very similar effect. It took million color mode to create the first image but the second has a lower color mode and less colors (51 colors vs 40). The second is more traditional because it works from a real limited color mode. Without a limit on available colors in the resolution it is hard to define too many. Using 200 colors out of a possible 256 would probably be too many in that case.

Not trying to piss you off buddy just making a point. You can take just about any image and reduce the colors x many times untill there are only two colors left. Since we cannot set a rule for canvas size in porportion to color count there is no clear defentition. If you were to say it could be done with less colors you would be right and you could continut to say so untill there were only two colors and some hatching patterns left. USUALLY you can reduce colors untill there are only two shades left. However if everyone worked in the fixed 256 color palette we could have a traditional limit.

Hallo Jalonso! Hehe,  I' have been very busy, working extra hours everyday and all. I have really rusted my pixeling abilities.

Happy new year to you too!!

Edit: mmm I have seen worse in the gallery. This girl is a dollist and she has no idea of color count, and obviously the colors here are really wasted, but I think some of her pieces could be accepted, as the technique is really good. I think it's very difficult to set up a standard if we don't really know an exact number of similar colors allowed.

But still, she has the attitude of : im not gonna listen stfu

po, I don't get where you're coming from at all there. I made that using 51 colors. I chose every shade with a purpose and for a purpose. Colors were only added when needed and not a single one was frivolous. The green shades were chosen s that they would blend with the greean and the grren with the yeloows. Manual control over every single pixel. The choice of the red ramp had to work for a dragon and the ladies hair. The yellows had to be green toned enough to work with the dragon yet suit the brown ramp for the wicker basket.
I controlled everything every single pixel on there. A required no help from software. Outputting at 256 is irrelevant I outputted it at 51 colors. That's all thats needed because I used color conservation to bring it down as much as possible while retaining my vision. I could have made this using around 30 if I recall but I found that the dragon needed extra colors. Color conservation and palette unification is very important in pixelart. It an essential aspect of mastering the medium. I don't find subject matter or what something looks like important at all. Its all technique and the exploration within a mediums specified (written or unwritten) rules.
This is why I can enter any type of museum and enjoy any kind of art. What things look like is irrelevant, its what things are that matter.

I understand you are very pretty, shallow and vain but I expect better from you.
I could make a game with Game Maker and it would be a playable game with a start screen, sprites and everything that is required to constitute a game.

are you implying that its equal to hardcore coding in BlitxMax using the uber technical code superiority and the beauty of clean and refined code?

Zing!!!!

*screw color conservation for now I'm off to bed to conserve energy back to the OT

I can be all those and more, I just lack the will to change, it's too bad that that is an essential step in the process. Honestly though, petty name calling and negative labeling makes for a poor discussion. It goes without saying that a person who is shallow and vain won't easly deviate from their pattern, why would you expect that they suddenly would? I think you know that I'm not either of those all of the time, this one goes into the playful banter catagory.

a. No You couldn't we tried that. I remember when we were working on that dungeon crawler game and the concept of a computer drawing images to the screen greatly confused you. (I'm not serious here)

b. Not with a Mac you can't. (Zing Zing)

You can almost always optimize your code just like colors in pixel art. As in coding the result of the optimizations are many times unnecessary. Getting the job done in .1 millisecs faster is not really that much even over hundreds of computations. Blitzmax is not an industry standard language. I can write a bit in C++ but for now using the quick and dirty Blitzmax is fine.

Anyways this is not about programming, that is a trade more than an art. I had not had games in mind when initially I posted about lower color images. I was thinking in terms of visuals in general including but not limited to game graphics of yesteryear. Really I would like to see color counts used within traditional color resolutions. You haven't set concrete rules for color count in art so anything rejected is a matter of personal taste. I offered my opinion and it can be flawed and illogical in the eyes of others, people can disagree and that's fine by me. I wanted to show that you could have used a traditional palette to achieve similar results. I know that given the palette you could have made better choices than the conversion algorithm. Molly Moo Cow could have used less colors she needs to consider challenging herself but there is nothing technically wrong with her art.

One could form a sort of boob fractal, each boob would sprout x many more reduced sized boobs at fixed positions, the process would be repeated for each boob in the set once. It would be extremely amusing to see. I would make it but people might think I'm sick. Perhaps I will do a version made with cones and you can fill in the blanks.
