Spartan, do you have the FX-9750 G Plus? 'Tis what I have; it's pretty neat. I wrote a library for string input and output, but I need to rewrite it to use matrices rather than lists. If you have a program-link I'll upload it to my website for you to D/L.

Monkey, i have the 9850 GC Plus. i think the only difference is that mine has 3 colors and yours is only black and white. I don't have a link cable. I cant find any in this country, so i am stuck rewriting other peoples code.

The bigger the dither matrix the more implied colors but the detail gets lost. With binary tone dithering, there is a tradeoff between number of implied midtones and amount of detail.
I like Bayer for it's crosshatch style.
Here is the same tree with Bayer dithering. Notice that the contrast is lost id the darker shadows but the image appears less grainy.

How much space is needed for the beads to slide? It looks like you might be lacking that, but I'm not sure if that's just an illusion.
Also please apply lighting to the woodtexture of the frame.

Over at Pixelation one actually liked the minimalistic one, another one said the first one is unreadable, third comment recommended lowering the contrast of the backgrounds. Which I'm doing now.

Going to the ladies' pink colored floral craft shop for the beads was really humiliating. It was the only place in town that had 1/2 inch wooden beads.
