I drew the piece without any reference. And I usually don't use a reference when I am drawing cartoon styled works, I just go with it. But I did agree with you that it was wrong. But you missed a lot wrong with it... if your going to red line me.

WELL
if you want me to get nitpicky... the whole thing is lit from the side, but the shadow from the visor (is that what that's called?) looks .. er... not lit from the side. And I've never seen a cap with the edges of the visor having actual angles - usually the corners are rounded off no? |

I know what your sayin about the underside of the cap. I used a hard light theory there. Its when the shade of color is made darker to give the effect of more depth (and sometimes art theory doesn't work).
And as for the edges, I'm not sure I follow you on. But I will say that I like it better now because the guy I was drawing this in reference to, wears his hat down over his eyes (even more than me). He also curves his bill so much that the sides nearly touch each other. So this does fit the bill better than what I had in mind. I was going to red line you latest piece from dA. But my wife said... "David, don't do that. Soo I didn't. Plus I didn't know how you'd take it. Thanks again Alex! |

Uhhh I really don't want to start a WIP thread for this, so maybe you guys can help me here.
Update:  My biggest problem is the hair clashing with the 'cartoony' feel of this. So I'm gonna do my best to tone down the thick outlines and shade the rest of it in a similar style.. Yes I'm eventually gonna give her hands, yes the eyes are in very early stages, yes the straps are made of rope... It's also taking forever, so I think I'm gonna crop it around the waist, instead of doing the whole body like I planned/sketched out. Tell me what you think!! |

Leel this is looking very cute. And the paint style you're using is very nice clean. I like it.
But.. I too have to agree with the boyz here. The hair is way to detailed for the style I think you're going for. You could either make the face and rest of the skin more detailed. Or take the easier route and simplify the hair. It just takes all the attention away from everything else. Too focal. Now the shirt is wonderful. It matches the style of the piece. But is still detailed enough were it works. If you could make the hair about as detailed as the blouse/ shirt... you would win hands down I bet. Try that. Don't get frustrated about changing the hair. I can tell you spent a lot of time on it, and prolly don't want to get rid of it. But do it for the greater good of the piece! It will be worth it in the end. Hope this helped some!  |

I still think you've underused (how do you like that word?) the brows. I mean, eyebrows are so important in showing character and expression and they just look really .. normal in this one.
