A simple cartoony tree that i made. It feels a bit bland, but i am not sure what should be added. Any suggestiones? Note: You can also critique my color palette outline etc if you want to. |

You're right on the bland part, but don't worry as it's an easy fix. I can tell your lighting is coming from the top. But the shading of the tree itself suggests that it's flat, like a face of a cube. Imagine the tree as a cone, being thinnest at the top, and getting thicker as you go down. Make the color wrap around the tree, instead of just going left to right, there should also be parts that jump out further than the other 'branches'. See the image below! I literally did that in about 20 seconds. You feelin' me?
edit: zomg sorry I forgot to crop it! Edited by ChrisButton - 12 December 2010 at 11:26pm |

the shape of the tree is bizarre. inb4 cartoony excuse. the foliage should be much larger than the trunk, but here they're practically the same width. good luck finding a shady spot to read beneath this tree.

True, the shape is a bitt off. Maybe this is better? Or do i need to make the trunk even smaller?

even smaller. just google trees : P
the base of the trunk is still as wide as the canopy. I'd make the width of the base no larger than the width that the top of the trunk is now. |

I don't mean this in an insulting way, but try looking at some trees first ;)
Edit: now on my photobucket! nuts to you sites with no hotlinking! Things to note - > branches and leaves spread out far from the trunk > the leaves make more of a dome than a ball > The trunk is small by comparison > The trunk doesn't slope from thin to thick, it's only at the very bottom it really widens, and those are the beginnings of the roots Edited by Zeratanus - 15 December 2010 at 8:42am |

the trunk flares out at the base. why? it shouldn't be a gentle slope all the way up, just a small curve indicating where the roots sweep away from the tree.
search the gallery for "tree", also I'm sure pixelation has plenty of helpful threads on tree-building. |
