Hi all, this is my first piece that I've put any real effort into. It's Yuna from Final Fantasy based on one of my favorite pieces of concept art.

I've spent the last couple of hours reducing the colour count from 52 to 40, I would like to reduce it more but don't really know how without ruining the image. It is a very colorful outfit after all... Something else I'm unhappy with are the little tassel on the right.

Let me know what you think and suggest any improvements if you can. Thanks :)

Seems like you are trying to recreate that concept art instead of making a pixelart version of it. It leads to over pixelling, over-dithering, etc.

Less colors, more definition, less pixelling.

OK, it's down to 27 colors now and it does look better I must admit. I'll see if I can squeeze a few more colors out.

Good point :)

I didn't really think to AA the border as it was a bit of an after thought putting it in. Originally I was thinking I'd not have a prominent border, do a background behind and AA Yuna and the background.

I'll have a go later and see how I go now that I know what you mean. Thanks a lot!

I don't really pixel in this style ever. I am not a fan of realistic pixelart and generally never comment on these types of pixels. Since I did suggest you are over pixelling and overdoing it, I thought I'd show you a poor example of less pixelling yet more detail (hopefully).
I did not use a lot of your colors and adjusted a few others. Your palette needs work ;)

Also, I did not check if you reduced the ref art and began with a trace. This is fine for some and not really wrong, but if you did so, consider altering the lightsource enough that you end up with an original version of the ref art.

Edit: I just re-read and want to say that I am not telling you what to do at all! I am just giving you a different set of eyes. I get involved with other PJ duties, adding, PMing, Mod stuff and sometimes forget to sweeten my words. I like your piece enough that I cared to comment I meant nothing personal by saying I don't like this kind of art, k.

Thanks jalonso, I didn't take it as you telling me what to do. I posted here to learn and that's what I'm doing!

I'm very happy to hear yours thoughts as you're one of my favorite pixel artists, you have the highest number of pieces in my favorites right now ;)

I did start with reducing it and tracing around it, and the palette was made by just selecting colors on the reference art. I did get a bit of a nagging voice in my head about how it was just the reduced reference art and so I extended the dress so it was entirely in frame, which turned out to be one of the best parts in my eyes (not to mention most fun).

As I said before this is my first piece and I've definitely learnt a lot from it. Firstly how much of a pain in the ass a giant palette is (and it doesn't really improve it to the point I'm going for). Secondly I started out with like no dithering and learnt that from Cure's tutorial. Thirdly just how the images are put together in general.

I don't really want to radically change it to the point that you indicate as my original intention was to make it have a more "realistic" look. On my next biggish piece I will probably choose the palette right from the start after making the border as I can see many benefits doing this.

Really appreciate your example.
