This is what happened after I read the cube tutorial. I used Pixen and Photoshop. Edited by Peechiz - 10 May 2011 at 8:40am |

The lightning bolts seem odd. Each individual one is technically correct, but as a whole they're each seen from a random angle. For example, the far left one is seen from below, which conflicts with the words that are definitely seen from above. Its placement in relation to the words would suggest that it should be seen from a side angle, but it's shaped as if it were directly in front of us.
There's a lot of NPA (non pixel art) elements here so it's difficult to really critique it. The photoshop filters, glowing effects, and addition of noise all disqualify this as being pixel art. The far right lightning bolt seems to have been rotated partially. This is something you should avoid in pixel art because the program you use will automatically add anti aliasing the the object you rotate, but in pixel art we are pretty hardline about anti aliasing only being done by hand and never by the computer. Like I said, it's difficult to critique, because all of the random colors from the noise and other NPA techniques/tools make it pretty much impossible for us to see what you actually did in terms of pixel placement. Thanks for the thoughts. I'm still figuring out appropriate comp size and output practices. I ended up having to half the size during output, so it's not a completely accurate representation of my pixels, and the comment about the bolts is right on.
In future posts here I'll try not to mix modes as much! |

That looks good. Here's a quick edit I made as a suggestion-
Notice how on your version you use 3 colors for the sides of the P!. The darkest one looks like good shadow, and the others are good highlights. The thing I did was switch the two highlights. On yours the lighter of the two is on the top facing sides, which is fine, except when you get to the side that's within the hole on the P and the top of the dot under the !. Having the lightest highlight on top makes it looks like the light is coming from above, but if it is then it wouldn't reach those two places. So by switching those colors now the light is coming from the directing the P! is facing. The other thing I did was put a shadow on the ground facing away from the direction the light is coming from. |

So it turns out portraits are just as hard with pixels as they are with pencils.

![]() I did an edit of your head. My final version is the head on the right. Not completely done, but I'm pretty satisfied with it. Your colors needed a little bit more red in them for the skin tones. I removed a lot of colors -- often in pixel art, expecially pixel art that's this small, more is less when making a palette. Don't be afraid to get in there and shade. Remember your light source, and shade accordingly. |

Cool, this helps a lot.
You took away my faux-hawk, though :P UPDATE: I gave it another pass using your edit.
Note: For some reason, Pixen does some weird things with shading when I use copy/paste. I didn't intentionally make it lighter. Edited by Peechiz - 11 May 2011 at 2:22pm |

I really enjoy this guy's style, so I took a crack at some fanart. Guess who's reading Transmetropolitan? (hint: thisguy) |
