A few days ago, I wanted to become a vector artist again. I love the clean line style, and would like to play with the interesting possibilities. So I downloaded illustrator. However, the pencil
tool has a few things it can not do, which annoy me a lot. You can get
things close to perfection with it, so I suppose most people just don't
care, but I am a perfectionist and want it to be just right on some
points. Some guy talked about inkscape, and I
gave it a try, and it solved all my problems with the pen tools in no
time! That was awesome! However it missed the proper shortcuts for the
pen tool, and it misses some features that are important if you want to
awesomify your work with ease (proper brushes/lines) I had a go at Raven, but that was not a competitor at all.. In
short: Even though pixel programs have their issues too, I have always
been able to make what I wanted to make, exactly like I had it in mind!
It might have taken a stupid route, or placing lots of pixels by hand
slowly while a computer could have done it, I always end where I want to
be. Pixel art is great! In the meanwhile I am looking for some
new art thingy to play with. I tried voxels but the editing software is
limited and the result is unrewarding. I have not so much interest in
3D models. I would try out digital painting properly some day again, as soon as I feel I have drawing skills and I have a tablet :p. Does anybody have a cool suggestion on what artythingy (probably digitally but not a requirement) I can try out? Does anybody else feel like his/her tools are limiting him/her all the time? |

As the old saying goes "where there's a will there's a way." If you want to make art you will make art regardless of what tools you have at your disposal. Several recommendations I have for you:

It's not about what you make, but the process of making it. Thats quite easy to say for someone who never makes something. To get back on your awesome list: Zen garden, what is that supposed to mean? I looked it up, it it is a garden of rocks. If you want me to meditate, I already am and do not consider this a visual art. If you suggest I should design rock gardens, I think it is a bad suggestion. Origami is cool, but I will feel a lot of limits and borders again. Like the edge of a piece of paper. Perhaps even the color of it. Legos are worse than voxels, not an option. Writing is cool, but I prefer to make visual things. ![]() |

If you want I can upload the entire contents of my art folder to the gallery and see what kind of lynch mob that will raise. ![]() Also I was going to suggest music, but I guess that's not your thing either. |

Music actually is my thing. However I always feel limited in the creation of new things, much worse than with visual stuff (visual things develop during the process, music always sounds as if it is already finished in my head and it is no fun converting whats in my head to waves, sheets, unless I can play every line live myself, which I usually can't), I really enjoy fooling around and listening to what happen.
Yet it does not satisfy my visual creation drive ;) |

If you paint and have a picture in mind its the same thing imo!! ![]() |

I don't blame the tools when I am making visual things for not doing how it looks in my mind, as my minds picture is often incomplete. It lacks the perfection that the final piece will have, and I will often think halfway that I am done while others can give their opinion and a whole new world opens!
With music, listening inside my head is like listening to real music, except that I can not click repeat and listen it again! Good luck with your electronic music :) |

Ah, I'm using Illustrator for a vectoring project right now. It's a lot more flexible than you think if you look up enough tuts. It freaks out a bit on me every once in awhile (, which bothers me, but that's my inexperience. :P (I've used it... two weeks?)
There are bits that bother me on my current vector, but I think it's because I've missed a few anchor points in my mesh. Examplelol (I need to fix my edges but don't want to right now, haha.) *Also, I've completely changed all of my shortcuts. So much easier than a-i or a-p-a-i-p-a-i-a-i-a-i-blahblahblah. Just go to Edit->Keyboard Shortcuts and change it all you want. :P My mind picture is always incomplete. I really like working with charcoal because I can shove and smudge around and erase stuff until I get what I want. :D |
