Try a bunch. Pick what feels best for you. There's no "ultimate pixel program".

I have tried gimp, paint.net and pixen for mac

So far each one has it's pros and cons. Still looking for THE program.

Try GraphicsGale (FreeEdition).

Its easy, and You can make animated pics, BUT, only shareware has the option to save as GIF. (wich I found irritating... )
