![]() Topic: Help...need help on how to properly makePosted: 06 November 2011 at 10:50am |

Ok so i've been attempting to sprite and all that for the past few days and i had been doing pretty well when you think of spriting like:
![]() *note that wasn't jpg when i uploaded it tinypic converted it to .jpg it was originally .png* but when it comes to actually making tiles you could say i need some help: ![]() If someone could lead me on to how to do this right so maybe i could create some good game graphics it would be nice ;) (by the way for anyone who might ask: i have gimp, graphics gale, and mspaint but have no clue how to use them to do this right XD) <>img, #cubbies-overlay{ -moz-transition-property: margin, box-shadow, z-index; -moz-transition-duration: 0.1s; -webkit-transition-property: margin, box-shadow, z-index; -webkit-transition-duration: 0.1s; } .cubbies-selected{ z-index: 9999; box-shadow: 3px 3px 8px -1px blue !important; cursor: pointer !important; margin: -3px 3px 3px -3px; } .cubbies-selected:active{ box-shadow: 2px 2px 5px -1px darkblue !important; margin: -1px 1px 1px -1px; } #cubbies-overlay{ position: fixed; z-index: 9999; bottom: 30px; left: 30px; box-shadow: 0 2px 3px rgba(0,0,0,0.8); border: none; } #cubbies-overlay:hover{ box-shadow: 0 2px 3px rgb(0,0,0); } Edited by milleja46 - 06 November 2011 at 10:51am |

Whoever moved this, move it back to the support forum, it's not WIP stuff it was a topic on trying to get help on how to do pixel art. It was in the right forum to begin with...

you want help improving your pixelart? they're works in progress, then. support is for general technical questions.
don't worry so much about depicting independent blades of grass. you want to go for a general texture. what is all the green between the individual blades, after all? Edited by cure - 14 November 2011 at 7:35am |

This is an ancient grass tile tome written many eons ago. It is your new (temporary) bible.
Study it through parts 1 to 6 (or until you are enlightened) then proceed with your quest in conjuring your grass tile. *heavenly voices sing as the link descends before you* http://gas13.ru/v3/tutorials/sywtbapa_almighty_grass_tile.php Go now, young one. And may the pixel gods grace you with patience and discipline. ![]() Edited by Partack - 14 November 2011 at 10:05am |

Ok...though it doesn't make sense....
@Partack: i've already read through that several times but ti's techniques and such do not help in any way. yea it taught some basic methods on what to and what not to do but in actually doing it proper...that's another story...but since it took so long to get a response here i acutally asked for help on PJ and they linked me to a few tutorials that are more helpful Also since originally posting the stuff before the move that happened i made this piece of grass: ![]() Edited by milleja46 - 14 November 2011 at 10:14am |

Very well. if you have studied the first tome as instructed, then you have taken the first step to enlightenment.
Your grasscraft skills still glow dimly, I'm afraid. Fret not however! Now you are ready for the next phase in your training. Behold! Another ancient tome! *Angelic " ahh "'s in a choir-like harmony as the links bright light suddenly appears before you in a dramatic blinding flash* http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/shtml/tutmini-grass.shtml Go forth! Increase your wisdom and hone your skills! I will be here waiting for your inevitable return. ![]() Edited by Partack - 14 November 2011 at 10:37am |

*Twack!* you forget your training!
Do you want to make this:
or this:
The tome is a guide. Don't copy what you see, go with your instincts and craft BEAUTIFUL grass. Try again. ![]() Edited by Partack - 14 November 2011 at 10:45am |

Maybe you just aren't trying hard enough xD
These things aren't easy. Dont give up. I'd suggest go play one of your favorite classic rpg's, and take special note of the grass. Might help to take a break and try to become more inspired. |

Well i've been aiming for a ToP/Golden sun style but can never get things to appear they do, the grass done on the tutimini thing doesn't look at all good tiled when i tried it becuase of a big gap(despite the fact i probably shaded wrong) between the left and right sides in the middle of the tile XD

Clear your mind. I shall take you on a Google journey of inspiration.
(made by Doppleganger on this very forum)
in this clouded confuzzlement , let there be only beautiful grass. (secret of mana 2)
Feel the grass. (secret of mana)
Allow the grass to have variation (unknown source)
Consider your grass's style Whether it be plain (deviant art, unknown source)
(unknown source)
artsy (animal crossing)
(crocodingus -iphone game)
or intricate (deviant art user lendrick (might not be pixel art.. not entirely sure..)
And remember to avoid the grid whenever you can..
Think about what environment (and style) the grass will be for because that matters as to what the grass will look like (is it cartoony or realistic or somewhere in between? will there be flowers? will it be colourful? will it be a well lit area? will the grass be dying? will there be dirt? is the grass hard or soft? long or short?). *cloudy fog dissipates and we are back on top of the mountain* Now go forth and ponder these things, receive your enlightenment and practice your grasscraft. Remember your training. May the pixel gods grant you infinite patience, young one. ![]() Edited by Partack - 14 November 2011 at 11:42am |

ok, this is the thing. a ToP grass tile is very simple when you look at it by itself, just as you are presenting your grass tile:
So how does the ToP grass tile work? two things: color: this is very tricky. You need to combine colors that will work together to create an illusion of grass when not inspected closely. This could take some trial and error. Notice how the ToP grass only has two colors, yet manages to look pretty good, because the hues are so different between the two colors. props: props such as a bush here or a flower there can really add to the feeling of a grass texture |

Tile variety is a real necessity. No matter how good a grass tile, if you fill a 10x10 block with it (all visible on screen), it will look repetitive and dull.

Less talk, more pixel. Takes 10-15 minutes to start a two-tone grass tile.
If you're not going to put in any effort after all that's been offered to you, I wash my hands with this thread. If you need help with the tiling part, try downloading tile studio http://tilestudio.sourceforge.net/ts.zip it gives you a live preview of the tile in tiled form as you edit your tile. (it took me an hour to find this again I haven't used this in a few years..) Edited by Partack - 14 November 2011 at 3:40pm |

Well i haven't had access to gimp until now because i've been at school accessing this site :P i don't like using mspaint for pixel art(though quite frankly for now i'm fine with how the grass looked in my last picture i just need to learn the other tiels and i'll come back to grass later)
