Hey guys, just getting back on PJ after a long time of being a noob and not doing anything. Just got some stuff I wanted to share. I would really like some tips or anything to help me tweak or enhance my work. So lay it on me.

Hi welcome back =)
let's see here, Your gameboy is a little wide and square. try to round the edges a little. I know it's difficult but give it a go anyway you'll learn something from it either way. your turntable looks nice but could benefit from a little shading, especially the lines on the edges and the record could use perhaps a light shadow on the underside of it. I think the top equipment looks quite flat and lacks depth yet the left side panel (The radio tuner i guess?) looks lovely so good job on that. If it is a turntable radio combo you might consider adding an aerial for it. the cyan glass doesn't sit well with me either to be honest but that's a matter of style and opinion. the glass could use a sheen though. perhaps a lighter cyan in a diagonal line. *shruggs* Good luck and have fun. =) |

Thanks for the help. I tried to implement some of what you said. I only
curved one of the bottom corners of the gameboy because on the real
thing only ones curved. For the turntable I tried to shade the side,
what do you think? I also added the shade under the record and some
shine to the top cover. I made 2 different covers let me know what cover
you think is better (personally I like 1) Thanks again.

I'm not too sure but I think your gameboy might still be a hair too wide. love the curve though, it works.
As for the turntable, yeah, #1 is better but only because #2 doesn't have a corrugated sheen along with its new lid. I think #2 could look better with a little TLC. Also, I was thinking of the sheen being a bit more.... vertical than that. As it stands, it just looks like a painted white 'go faster stripe' You forgot to show us the open lid version. Woulda' liked to have seen the new inside =) By the way, it just occurred to me, if these two are to be incorporated into the same piece, they're definitely not to an accurate scale. Meaning the gameboy is either too big or the turntable is too small by comparison of one or the other. Just thought I'd point that out. Keep going =) you're doing well. |

Ok I thinned out the gameboy just a bit more and added better sheen to the cover. I'm also not making them to scale lol, but what do you think?

![]() Know your vertices. I've made a few sloppy edits to illustrate some points. I'm aware the angle of the record is wrong, I couldn't be bothered to play with it any longer but I just wanted to give you an idea on how black is a very powerful colour when working with sprites this small. (That and you've got to finalise this yourself.) When working at this scale you should use alternate colours to define forms to get the right shapes. I've not added any colours and used only the colours in your current palette (which by the way it's count too high and I'll touch on that in just a sec) notice how the record has no black outline but still appears shapely and also notice the buttons on the gameboy are not defined circles. About the gameboy, you put the curve on the wrong side , you were missing the start and select buttons, your screen was too chunky and you forgot the speaker. Now as for your colour count this GIF contains 23 which is a silly amount based on the level of detail this piece has. it should be around 16 or there abouts. When you make a new colour, slap a blob next to your piece so that you know it's there and can keep track of which colours you're using, how many there are and you'll get a little representation of the colour ramp for darks and lights too which can aid your judgement on shading things and deciding on if a new colour is needed or not. It's generally bad practice to have too many 'samey' colours. Please understand that I'm not trying to put your work down or anything, the turntable is lovely,I especially like the little radio tuner on the side of it.and the gameboy although chunky had its charm because of the choices of colours. I'm merely pointing out what I see so that you can study it and decide for yourself on what to take from my observations. Good luck. =) |

Thanks a ton dude. You're so right about the gameboy, your edit looks godly! I understand what you mean now (I'm a bit of a visual learner lol) I get what you mean now about the under-shade on the record. I'm going to take another crack at it. Check back later tonight or tomorrow afternoon I'll probably have edited this post to show the work, and again thanks a ton for taking the time to help me out.
