Hi, I was wondering if any of you salty old pixel artists could give me a hand with shading hair on a small sprite
This is what i have so far. When I try to shade it, it looks like...plastic |

I think the shape of the hair is a little weird right now, kinda boxy and jaggy, doesn't conform to the shape of the head. I'd work on defining the general clusters of hair first (figure out how they work: where does the hair part, if she has a ponytail, how does that pull the rest of the hair), then imply the strands with highlights. And as with anything, make sure to use references (photos of real people with hairstyles similar to the hair you want to make).

u used waaaay too many colors for the skin tones...they dont help defining the forms at make it look rather blurred and muddy...
by having this many colors u easily loose control and refining on pixel level can get very difficult. a well chosen palette with maybe even 4 - 8 colors and very careful pixel placement can take u a long way with a small sprite like this. edit for the fun of it ![]() Edited by onek - 04 June 2012 at 8:55am |
