    Posted: 01 February 2006 at 6:35am

Here is an unfinished human sprite that I have been currently working on for the past hour or so. I am quite pleased at the current results but as you can see their is still much more room for improvement since the sprite model is not yet complete (ie. lightsource, colours, detail, body shape). Right now their are a total of 32 colours, counting transparent background and clothing, which only has one pixel. The skin tone is not exactly the primary colours, meaning; not the exact lightsource shades, I just added them just to give you a visual of what her skin would/could look like when complete, however, they are out of place and of no use to me at the moment, that is why they will be changed once I'm finished.

One more thing; don't comment on the clothing, if you do, then, well, I'll know how illiterate you could possibly be, because you should know by now that I stated on this and other posts, that I have "not" got around to shading her outfit, besides that her outfit also got a makeover.

Anyway here are the recently updated pictures I created:

Take note; the update pic is "always" located at the bottom of this thread, scroll down to veiw it. It "can" also be found at the bottom of this post.

omg! how can you have 31 colors in that? im speechless either you have some color managment issue or you jus dont care about color count.

either way i think 31 colors is pretty high, especially since you only started :O

Edit: Oh btw its very very good currently, nice design. looking forward to see this finished

Edit 2: yes Jalonso is right there, the left(our left) arm is waaaaaay to short, the hand is almost at the same height of the belly bouton and normally it should be the elbow thats there.

Image is copyright to Pixelchallenge

so here you have it. i guess an image is worth a thousand words so ill shut up now :P

I agree with DiOxygen on color count. I do see her right forearm is wonky especially at the elbow and wrist. Also, it may be an illusion from such a low cut dress, either the torso is too long or her legs are too short. And, and the crow is too big its almost eagle sized.
I do like it overall.

Here is a small update. Fixed right & left arm length, fixed hairline and made sure to resize the crow. I also fixed up the face portion a little. I adjusted the eyebrows a bit so that it looks like she is showing more of a smirky emotion.

No, I do care about color usage, and 'no' I don't have issues with colour management, it is just that sometimes every once an awhile I go a little bit too far with colouring pixel by pixel, I wind-up totally forgetting how many colors I had used from my palette, but yeah you do have a point, I think I should cut down on that.

Next time use a link please. That image is too large.

I never realised that I was spriting the bodie's position wrong. I guess its time I start wearing my reading glasses while actually drawing from now on, heh. Thanks for pointing that abnormality out.

Try fixing the arm by rounding out the shoulders a tad.

And somethings going on with them breasts, they seem too.... square.

I like the rest of it though.  The skin colors are spot on.

Here is the last small update before I finish it. Now here are the updates; I coloured in both of the arms, I repositioned her breasts 3 pixels downward, I added some fur to the little fella, you know, the crow? I also added buttons to her garment and stretched her legs a bit. Hmm, and before I completely forget I redid her hair (color swapp) and added two more pigtail extensions to the back of her head.

Square shaped, huh? You really must know your breasts, heh. I'll see what I can do.

Ever hear of amazon hair? It's suppose to resemble something similar too that, however I shortened the pigtails anyway, I thought they were a tinybit too long to begin with.

I knew someone would have pointed that out sooner or later. Well then, let me tell you why their both raised; because she will have one to two crows on both pairs of arms, but sadly thats in the final version, the finished peice which I'm currently working on at the moment.

They still look bended awkwardly. I'm not sure how to fix it because I'm not sure how they would bend, but the pose, even if she's holding crows, looks unnatural the way the hands are bent.

its really really really a mirror alert here, it looks like you only did 1 half and mirrored it. It does not look good, try to variate the shading, get a lightsource and actually stick with it.

and yes the pose feel unnatural

Solid, I just noticed that the dress does not contour over/around her breasts, its 2D. I think this what has been throwing me off thinking her torso is too long.

Hmm, the concept has been changed some, so bare with me, heh. This is what the 'final' peice should definitely resemble when I finally complete it. Here are the list of updates as usual; Fixed breast(again), fixed left arm, added belt, added knife, added skull necklace, completed hair, fixed her garment, and I am working on the staff. Of course C&C is always appreciated. Enjoy.

The copied portion of the arm was just for an experiment I was conducting, thats all, I guess I had forgotten to add the new arm while posting that day, my apology.

the boobies are still flat. try making about half the belly above the button in a dark shade, to show that they stick out, thus blocking light from above.

Yet another small update; Cut the dress around the waist, giving her a more seductive appeal, adjusted the nipples, fixed her hair by making it longer, and changed her facial expression. Still creating the staff.

I resized her breasts by two pixels, satisfied? I also moved her nipples inward just for you.

Completed 90%. Sadly though, the rest will just have to wait until I'm finished with another peice that I'm currently working on. Today I am not going to bother with explaining the updates, I think you can spot them out yourselfs.

Thank you all for your support, it helped.

EDIT ; I am now working on this peice once again, this time to finish it now that I have some extra free time on my hands. Now here are some noticable update featuring some small improvements and changes that I have made over the past week; reposisitioned the arm, changed the hair colour & redid her hair style, changed her outfit again, and updated the staff/wand whatever you wanna call it, thats it basicaly, enjoy. C&C away!

Ps. The right hand is too small, so don't critisize me on that please, if you do, I won't answer, simple as that, so don't ok. Thank you.

Everything looks fairly good.  Im loving the new staff!   In fact, I want one of those.

I do have a couple of crits though.

The pupils have always been a little too far apart for me.  I know it might end up looking wierder if they move inward if the dimensions arent big enough, but it would make her seem like shes looking ahead, not bugging out.

I would work on the shading of the neck as well, unless it was meant to look that way, it doesnt seem natural.  Same with the breasts, you may not have even finished those yet, but the lack of shading on those and the odd shading of the nipples make them look out of place.

The pupils cannot be moved any further inward or outward, I had tried this several times when I had first began this pixel peice, the end result always ended up making her look cross eyed, I guess she was meant  to look that way as sad as that sounds, heh.

That is how it was meant to be visually, but then again it is not finished after all either. They will be changed accordenly when I choose a lightsource spot.

you have some interesting lightsourc issues going on here

her shoulders are lit from directly above, her body seems to be lit at either side and somehow in the middle, each segment of her hair is lit different (her head and each pigtail), the ball in the mouth of the staff has a hard leftward lit spot, but this isn't shown anywhere else.

hate to be a wet blanket but you really need to pick one lightsource and stick to it for allllll the elements or this is going to become very confusing and flat.

also, try holding a staff straight up and down with your elbow that closely tucked into your body, while I can't argue it's impossible it's surely not comfortable or natural. And her two forearms have unnatural curves to them, might want to straight them out some.

edit: and the staff should probably fall somewhere onto the skirt, not behind like that. And unless she's standing on an incline this piece has no perspective to speak of so you probably don't want to toss in a random perspective for just the skirt bottom.

To you, yes, but to me, definitely not. I like to screw around with the lightsource a bit when first starting a WIP, don't we all? The highlights on the skins tone you see before you are, well guides. These so called "guides" help me pinpoint the location of the surrounding lighting, basicly they are place holders. Though the reason why they are scattered about on each side is for experimental usage only, that is it. You see, when I have finally decided on a direct spot for the lightsource, then, I will edit whatever other half I do not accept into a darker shade of that selected color.

Oh by the way; I decided on the location of the lighting an applied it, just for you. Still, it needs some work, but I don't have time at the moment to fix it.

You certainly do not need to pick out every single nook an cranny Saiklor, come on now, you really believe I need someone to point out all these errors? No, because I know they already exist, silly. Anyway, it helps.

I had forgotten to add the bottom part to the staff when I updated it previously, my mistake, thanks for pointing that out.

The skirt looks really odd in shading. Some parts are detailed, and some are left blank. The folds don't really look natural. I'd suggest a reference pic because I'm not entirely sure how you can directly fix it.

I totally understand what you mean, the dress does need some curves and ripples, but at the moment however, I am working on her flesh and upper outfit (jacket), the dress, which is now a skirt, will have to wait until I am finished.

This looks much better now but, her left arm still looks like that postion would be very very uncomfortable, try to come up with a new way that she can hold her staff.
She also looks very stiff, try to make her look more relaxed take a look at So-lous lineart of her mage on the top of this page http://pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=153&PN=1 &TPN=8

and see if that helps a bit, well good luck.

Update. Hmm, I might end up finally finishing this peice up by the end of tonight, yeah thats what I'll do. Atlast the changes; Redrew her hair to blend in with her newly added facial expression, fixed and shaded her body so that it aligns properly with the surrounding lightsource, and last but not least; I added an additional belt.

This is just a little thought. Do you notice how many people place their weight on one leg and get that little lowered hip action? From your picture, the weight would probably be on her right foot (the one pointed outward). Just stand up and try to position your self like the girl with one foot pointed out, and a hand on your hip. I tried it and my weight went to the straight foot.

It's not something that needs fixing, becuase the stance would be fine without the change. I'm just noticing a stiffness in her legs and stance. Just think about it and decide what YOU want to do.

There's still no shading on the clothes. I don't think it can look very good without shading on the clothing. And, if you're shooting for realistic boobs, her nipples are kind of off. Real tits aren't like that at all thanks to a little thing called gravity. But tits are rearely realistic in games/senarios/types of things like this so.. I guess that's not as important. But... if you're shooting for realism, just FYI. She looks like she's had a boob job.

yes, I agree with aleiav.. I mean, I know it's all fictional character and everything, but DEAR GOD!! her boobs are the size of her head!!  They'd be hanging down to her knees in real life lol, she'd need a back-brace just to stand up!  I tried not to say anything, but I had to back up aleiav on the boob job comment

I think we're forgetting once very important piece of information here: shes a sorcerer (or sorceress), she can alter her boobs with dark magic.

I have to agree this piece REALLY needs some shading on the clothing. And the black outline needs an eviction notice.

I still feel like they look ridiculous regardless. All you ever see is
women who look like that in fantacy art everywhere. Granted, it is
fantacy but it gets kind of annoying. I'd just like to see a woman fighter
that isn't half tit for once. >_< Just my perspective.

I agree with you Alieav. There aren't nearly enough large crotched male fantasy characters to even out this gender unbalance.

In any case, these breasts don't even seem believabley oversized. They look completely flat, despite the fact that theyre meant to be large. This isn't aided by the arms, especially her right arm, which should lean back more to create the illusion of th breasts sticking forward. The angle of the left arm could also be fiddled with, so that it actually feels like she is holding something three dimensional. The breasts also stick outward, making them look awkwardly fake, somewhat similar to Mr Garrison's breast implants in a recent episode of South Park.

Positive things: I like her face, it seems unconventionally alluring. The skull on the top of the pole also looks well rendered. I'm not going to mention the clothing, like some other people here have, because it's obvious that you havent finished-nor even begun- most of the clothes yet, and thats fine because this is a work in progress.

Just keep working on fleshing out the character with shadows, you've got a long way to go before she'll really start to feel like more than a 2D doodle.

I agree with you Alieav. There aren't nearly enough large
crotched male fantasy characters to even out this gender unbalance.

I wasn't really joking, but whatever. I shouldn't bring up debate
topics in an art thread anyway. It wouldn't be much of point here or
in general because I don't feel as though it's taken seriously. I'm
sorry to bring up it again, but I felt like it had to be said.

Qualms about "reality" of boobs aside, on a character design level,
I'd just like to see something a little different for a change.

As far as any other aesthetics, I think a lot is without shading but the
metal effect on the staff is done really well. I think if you want it to
be more metallic looking you should try upping the contrast. I do like
the skin pallate.

I think you've got awesome lineart going. And it all starts with well
formed lines. Just keep this going.

I wasn't joking either, I do agree with you. Large breasted women are not only an unrealistic portrail of females, but theyre also unpractical and down right boring.

Hmm, here is another update (after a few long months):

Still not much has been done as you can see but thats because I'm too lazy, heh. I'll finish adding shades & colours (whatever) when I have more available free time on my already busy hands.

By the way; I could not help but notice the last few recent posts regarding her breast size (issue). Funny stuff eh? but seriously folks (with all sarcastic remarks aside) its just boobs, besides I'm sure there are even bigger breast sizes then the one she previously had, so its no big deal alright? "BUT" I reduced the sizes anyway, just for you guys/gals.
