I do the coloring squared sheets, and the squares are 20 by 20. Can we do a smaller sized challenge soon, because I would love to participate.

Here's some inspiration (or a visual illustration of the types of portraits you should make for the challenge, since a bunch of people still seemed confused).

Yeah. Him, Bart Simpson and any of Jim Carrey characters were kinda easy to think of, I admit :P

Some rough, way too bold sketches toying around with ideas. Snapped shot of sketchbook with phone and had to mix levels and brightness to all hell to make them somewhat evenly readable, but sketches are just sketches and they serve their purpose well enough to share ;)

Just started a little something, still sketchy for the moment. Using DB palette as a base :) Hope I'll be able to finish in more than 5 minutes before the end as I usually do

Wow, good stuff so far! Certainly going to get a couple "characters" this week.
Here's my wip (still need to fix the outline, nose work, ear work, forehead fixing and add a BG) ![]() |

Didn't post here the past two challenges, because I couldn't be bothered to register to the forum (since you sort of have to do it again for the forums)
I'm not too fond of traditional "face-pulling", stretching your face with your fingers seems too cheesy to me. (Yes, I know it's a kid thing, but anyway) This is something I was doing yesterday, but I want to try to go with a better idea, so I left it as is: ![]() In any case, I think the hardest part of the challenge is coming up with the concept of what you'll be doing ![]() Dunno what I'll be doing, but it's gotta be asymmetrical, and use as many colors as possible ![]() Edited by YellowLime - 17 January 2013 at 6:02am |

Hmm I'm definitely joining this challenge and every one that comes, so I'll post my WIP attempt now to ask you for some feedback guys!
![]() Biggest issue for me is the pallete, I cannot use very well hue shifting and I even have problems choosing a single color to start. As I said, every bit of criticism will help me improve my skills! So speak! @Joseki: I like your last entry more than the Einstein one, is more original and I love the cartoonish feeling it has! @YellowLime: Certainly, coming up with the actual face is the hardest part. @a3um: Your piece is great, I think a little more polish onto it will make it perfect! |

OK Crimson, I'm not too good with words so I made a GIF to illustrate:
![]() -Put white in the eyes and removed it from the mouth, as I guess you were going to do -Changed the contour of the face in some small places (and the upper right corner) -Changed the color of some lines to a brighter color (especially on the nose, maybe you won't like that) I'm not too confident in some of these changes, and you are of course free to ignore them and follow your original intentions Your entry is looking good in general, I like it ![]() |

So, whoever is reading this, if you wanna send me some tips I'll be happy, but after some working I got this:
![]() I don't think it's stealing, but I used Joseki's colors for the skin. Edited by :Felips - 18 January 2013 at 12:26pm |

Its not stealing, felips. Just be sure to credit him in your submitted piece. Here's a few things to take in consideration. The facial structure and proportions are kind of out of wack. The ear is too small, the eyes too big, nose isn't in between eyes, the chin is kinda odd looking, and stuff like that. The shadow on the neck isn't curved and the neck on the left side is way too stiff and strait. And I think the dimple caused by the lip biting would be on the other side (not 100% sure though). Keep at it, and welcome to the forum/site!
So I'm not too sure how to approach the BG, but heres a couple attempts: ![]() ![]() Still have to figure out what looks best, and add some AA. EDIT: I think I prefer the second one, cause I think the contrast is too high on the 1st (and I'm getting some weird kind of Sonic the Hedgehog vibe from it, for some reason ![]() And I may or may not add an other dark color to shift from the dark brown to black shadow. Anyway some words of advice are welcome Edited by crozier - 18 January 2013 at 9:33pm |

Hello YellowLime!! Thanks very much for your input and suggestions. It's been helpful.
Of course I was going to color the eyes white and change some lines, I think my main issue is with the palette. Anyway, I've made some changes as the picture progressed, so I'm going to post it now. ![]() TOTALLY WIP, in case you were wondering. I have to work now on the right side of the picture, some color tweaking (eyes, teeth) and many other details as I complete it (maybe hair? that's some risk in my newbie hands!), so any comment and criticism is helpful for me! @:Felips: I think yours is nice because it's simple, cartoonish and nice overall, maybe some more details will either work or ruin the pic... not really sure. crozier tips may be worth trying. @crozier: I like the second background better, too. It's less distracting. For the shadow, I think some little dithering will help. Nice head! Edited by CrimsonPixel - 18 January 2013 at 9:49pm |

So, crozier and CrimsonPixel, I really liked those tips. And yes, it's suppose to be cartoonish. I changed a lot of things and I pretty shure it was worth it.
