So, I've been trying to find a resource on how to make human sprites for use in game design. I got bitten by a dog a while back right where my thumb connects to the rest of my hand and I think it healed poorly, as drawing for more than 20-30 minutes causes a lot of pain.  So, I can't really get the practice in to improve my hand drawing and thought maybe I could do pixel art instead as that uses a mouse.

I started to search online for pixel art tutorials and practically every one I can find seems to always start with "Step one, take line art from a drawing you already finished..."

Which of course I can't do. Do any of you know of a good tutorial on making sprites that doesn't involve using an actual pen and paper? (i have found a few good ones for inanimate objects, but never human sprites)

Not everyone uses the pen/paper first method. I haven't used pen/paper in years and years and find no problem drawing in any app. You must remember (thru your pain) that an app is only a tool in your creative arsenal like any other. Maybe you need a tablet/stylus???

My problem isn't with paper as a medium as much as with a pen as a tool. I start getting severe pain at the base of my thumb from holding a pen.

I understand that apps are just tools, but I wasn't asking for an app, i was asking about if there are any tutorials that don't rely on pre-finished line art as the first step.

A pen+paper/pen tablet is probably always going to have the most natural lines; but you could always try creating lineart with curves; like Photoshop's pen too.

This tutorial helped me out alot.

Also, you should check out some spriting videos on YouTube. Basically, you can do it like you would on paper, drawing a stick figure to plot out the sprites body, use another color to draw a rough body and then continue with that until you have a perfect sprite. I hope this helps.
