I recently tried to post a pixel work of mine. Oddly (very oddly) It was not accepted and I was told it was not pixel art. How can that be? I used a pencil tool in MSPaint and placed each pixel (dot by tiny dot) in place. I know what pixel art.

I also received a rather snippy comment saying that I tried to 'fool' the site into posting a non pixel work. Why would i sign up for a pixel art site and not post pixel art, when i have worked in pixel for years?

I am very upset. Perhaps the 'confusion' arose from the fact that at one point the piece was saved as a JPEG (i make several copies of my works to save in different folders, since my computer crashed a few years ago and I lost ALOT of work) and the original BMP was destroyed in said crash. I was only able to find the file again as stored on an online image storage site.

Please, moderators, re think your decision. The piece in question, Aragorn 03, took approxamately 6 hours of dot by dot work.

color reduction? uhm no sorry i did it pixel by pixel. pixel art doesn't HAVE to be in the style of something like Metal Slug, it can be black and white too.

but if you really think that go ahead and layer it over the ref photo, see if it matches up. go on. if you doubt me that much....

actually, how can you prove any art submitted here is pixel art? what are your 'definitions' and how can you tell? i'm curious. if someone like me, who has been doing pixel art for YEARS the original way with MSPAINT, pencil tool used dot by dot and no bucket fill, can be accused, twice, of using artificial means, how can you tell with anyone elses art?

Stfu, take your complaining somewhere else.
It looks like a color reduced image, and to someone who moderates the images they see the same thing we see in it.

if u really placed every pixel by hand, why did u place them so awefully? (awefull like the mentioned colourreduction in some dtp-tools just is)

there are lots of great examples of well used dither in the gallery.

I don't see why it's that hard to believe that it was pixeled. The only thing I can see is that it got screwed up, even though it's .png. And really? Color reduction? to me it looks like the darkened side of the face (right side) is too wide. I don't think photos can do that.

yup it is abit too wide. hate to have to use my anatomy mistakes to point out the obvious that i didnt color reduce. *actually, i have no idea how you would do that anyway, getting this exact effect.*

Look. If hardly anyone believes it's truly pixel art anyhow, then what do you gain by having it in your gallery? Just take the picture, keep it in your archives, treasure what you'd learned by making it, and carry on with life.

I'm going to side with the people that are skeptical of this piece's purity, sorry. Then again, I think the piece "Madison Pixelled" isn't handmade, despite the fact that the artist has the skills to do so.

Yes. Stop arguing, noone's gonna win. Carry on, make new pixel art, and for sanity's sake, place the pixels less sporadically.

If you want to prove yourself your going to have to show more work, this might not be worth it to you but if you want to clear your name its what you have to do.

and why the hell is there 93 colors :O

*edit*

I highly doubt you have the required godly skills to do that, yet i dont really care, jus out of sheer curiosity i did that little experiment.

I did a blur, some noise removal and thats what i got.. it looks pretty detailed and perfect.. all the details in the beard..

Alls I gots to say is... prove your worth with everyone here by posting a work in progress in these forums to show how you get to where you're going. Nobody can dispute it then. For now, I'm apathetic to the situation until anything is proven definitely by either side.

I do think, however, that the accusations could be toned down a bit and put a bit of diplomacy in your rants guys.

I really don't know either way but I agree with pb do a work in progress on the forum. My advice, if you really did it, then ignore the negative comments and just keep pixeling. I love your little panda and look forward to seeing more of your work. Don't let a few negative people chase you away from this community. Just keep trying.

well i will keep pixeling but not here. if this so-called community does nothing but leave nasty comments, doubts validity, and accuses new submitters of using filters than this is not a 'community' in the kinder sense of the world. i was posting here to get real comments and critiques, not bashings. plus after looking at other works and comments on them, this place seems more like a personal bitchings site and doesn't seem focused on pixel art and  new explorations of the medium.

if you look closer you'll see that the beard is off, it doesnt follow the curve of his cheek as it does in the picture, parts of the hair was way off,  so is the armor, his nose, the cleft of his chin and the right side of his face isn't shadowed properly.

so fine, doubt me but - do you believe everyone else who posts here posts their art? if you doubt one you must doubt others unless you actually watched them do it

and i did use ref, but i didn't cheat by layering over i had a print out.

again, do you have to use bright colors, dithering and AA to make pixel art? the true definition is dot by dot using a 1px pencil tool in a program like MSPaint. thats what i do.

look, if the admin on this site didnt accept it then its not accepted, get
over it, move on. Im sure you will find this IS a great community if
you show us more work, perhaps post in the wip section for
comments. Just because one of you pieces recived bad feedback,
take it like a man and prove people wrong.

i hope you stay in this community, why not make a new start and
show us some of your other works
Snark, we love yuu.

i never said that you had to use bright colours. i said that the colouring was muddy. muddy as in it looks blurred, unsharp.

and you show a lot of inconsistency in your works( i'm not talking about differences between works, i mean inconsistency in 1 work) in stuff like shading (sometimes real, sometimes extreme contrast, sometimes pillowshaded) and detail.

no, it's not neccesary to use AA dithering and bright colours. i often use simple flat colours (points at avvy)

the point is to use every pixel to the fullest, its doent mean it has to be done one pixel at a time, or in mspaint. just, no automated photoshop brushes and filter stuff.

and as a last thing: after comparing the 2, it kind of convinced me that yours is pixelart. but a few notes:

the dithering pattern you used looks VERY much like some sort of error diffusion, rather then handmade dithers. i'm not telling you to use the same (pretty boring actually) dither type i use, but you could try something like this.

i think you could've made a better use of white, in the forehead for instance and on the armor. i'll give you an edit to show what i mean
